Giving the guy a new Range Rover, is still cheaper than standing three coppers outside the Equadorian embassy, 24 hrs a day, in case they get to see Julian Assange.
And given how much the Met spends every year policing a two day event like Notting Hill Carnival etc. Ie 7000 cops at overtime rate....
-and, watching numerous traffic cop shows on TVs, and seeing cop cars getting smashed up,
And, the huge sums being paid into the Met police pension fund every year to keep these retired senior officers wealthy, it's p!ssing in the wind!
If he turned up to the Cenotaph, in a Mondeo, people would indeed point!

I wonder if we see Jeremy Corben buck the trend, and get a Prius.

To be honest I'm surprised he has been given one and not an XJ instead as that would have been even cheaper. Hardly good advertising having a police chief moved about in it either. As for security and parking, there are shed loads of hyundais on the fleet, could he not use one of those and then not worry about the parking and such thing and dino it just anywhere with lights on...... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Daily Mail, what do you expect? Can't see why he needs anything 4WD though.

Give the guy a break, he is the Chief of the biggest Police Force in the UK so IMHO deserves whatever he wants, it will be a loaner or a cheap lease which is peanuts really in the big scheme of things. He has obviously put in the hours getting to that position, or knows the right people, probably both. Just my tuppence worth Thumbs Up

My thoughts;

- Daily Mail, say no more !

- This is a very senior job with a heck of a lot of responsibility, so an exec car and driver would be what you would expect

- He is a huge security risk / target so good car for evasion and an appropriate driver seems very sensible to me

- Bound to be a on a deal from JLR, like the Royal fleet

- Whether or not he might be a mason is nobody's business but his

Daily Mail fuss about nothing important as usual - please stop buying it, that way it will disappear or change Whistle

Maybe the drivers have changed tack but they always used to prefer RWD and a lower profile vehicle. I doubt it's a B level vehicle. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

So basically if the stand in is an A6 why didn't they save more money and get an XJ/XJL? And why did it have to be vse with rse when I bet he has a perfectly good iPhone or blackberry?!

Aren't X5's cheaper as well so if they are good enough for some of his traffic units why can't he have one and save more money then? Just doesn't sit right with me that what he could be doing is using X5's coming to the end of their lives for a few months at a time and have put the money back into 2 officers on the force(sorry service!) instead... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

There is no consideration whatsoever given to what the money could otherwise be used for; welcome to the world where public services are run with cherry-picked business ideas.

Personally though, I don't begrudge the Managing Director (just can't bring myself to call him a policeman) having something so modest as a FFRR (relatively speaking) but for me, the real problem is how far down the food chain the same perks percolate and how many get it.

i know it was in his salary (£260,000) to have a car, and driver, but i bet you, when he retires, shortly, he will of course be able to keep his current car. and then take his pension, at two thirds of that salary, to do nothing, but, write books, and go into public speaking etc. and maybe the house of lords.
and i bet you also, he still will have a london (secong home) address to 'use'
so, its all downhill from here.
