petition for aires in the UK

There is a petition to get out wonderful government to look into getting our even more wonderful local councils to provides Aires like there are on the continent (France).
It needs 10,000 sigs by Feb in order to get them to "look into it" but what the means is not defined.
When I signed it , it was at 4390, a bit rubbish I think

If you think this is a good idea then you could (if you wish) go to

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/105748

and cast a vote

you will get an email back asking to confirm your email which will register you vote

worth a try I think, even just a few aires in the UK would be a start

Taken from the petition ( I had no idea either )

Spain, France, Portugal and Germany have these Aires or Stellenplatz, only the UK does not. An Aire is an area in a carpark or community centre for example where Motorhomes can park for a period up to 24 hours. If we are truly part of Europe why do we not have the same areas provided by councils in this country. European governments understand that by allowing Motorhome to park they are encouraging people to visit their country which boosts their economy of nearby shops and restaurants. GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus
HAVE 1999 Discovery 2 GS 4.0 V8 - Silver - Off Road Toy
GONE 2013 L405 4.4 SDV8 Vogue. Black with Silver roofline and 22" s

Free sites for motorhomes caravans etc, usually provided by local councils, very common in France , Spain Portugal etc
Some have basic facilities others are better equipped . These countries are much more motorhome/caravan friendly than the UK which is poor in this respect

there are none in the UK ( but one council DARN SARFf has a plan for one, i believe )

They are great for en route stopovers when travelling across Europe, however it is wise to get to know where the good ones are. I usually avoid the ones near cities or big towns.

Sounds like a good idea, we British do not have a track record of welcoming or recognising the benefit of tourists so not surprising that there are none on the island , worth a signature IMHO Thumbs Up

They're usually rest areas other than service areas at frequent intervals on motorways. IE. they usually have toilet facilities and picnic areas but no other services. Designed to encourage motorists to stop for rests on longer journeys. There are, therefore, no commercial pressures.

A very good idea IMO. John

the european countrys are much larger than the UK and when traveling long distances these aires are a must to be able to have a rest for the driver....cant see it happening in a small congested country likes ours.. ... - .- -.

I use the ones in France , so can't comment on Spain Germany Portugal etc
but actually there are plenty off the beaten track in rural areas
There are books you can get "All the aires of france /Spain" etc
which tells you where they are

I thought I'd look Aires up as it is an interesting idea; this is not very informative but has some information http://www.motorhomeparking.co.uk/aires.htm

Paraphrasing one section:- It seems we have about 4,000 aires equivalents already, part of the Nightstop Scheme which compares very favourably with other countries, especially so given our landmass size.

The main difference between aires and private sites, as I see it, is that in the former, the local taxpayer pays whilst the user uses it for free whilst in the latter, the user pays for their usage. I'm not saying what is right, just pointing out that it seems anything and everything in this country just now has to either pay its own way or have a very good case for not doing so.

I can't find any numbers on net financial benefit which is a shame because someone somewhere will point to cuts in public services et al.

Well most of the councils in this country can't "afford" public toilets in town centres so good luck with that one. Confused Agueroooooooooo. 93-20

Nightstops are ok , I use them occasionally , but they are not the same as "Aires"
Motorhome Parking is a privately run organisation , basically you call the pub and they agree to let you park over night in their car park.
There won't be any facilities as such, some are welcoming and friendly , others are not.
At the very least you would expect a local council run Aire to meet minimum standards rather just providing parking

I take an old fashioned view about government and especially local councils I.e. They are there for the Benifit of the citizens, who pay their wages, but if you take a "good luck with that approach" they will soon forget that and start acting for themselves. If you don't make your voice heard, they have the perfect excuse to ignore you.

Totally agree with you on your stance re councils purpose and obligations but they are continually cutting back on providing any type of facilities for the masses so providing rest stops for what realistically are the minority to use will always be way down the list of priorities. Hence the good luck remark. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
