Major engine oil leak 4.4 TDV8

Well, I picked it up last Tuesday. Before collection the garage had the mot done and there were advisories on a slight oil leak. They said it was sorted and they'd done a service. I took it to my local Land Rover dealer this morning for a brake hose recall and they told me it had a major engine oil leak and sent me a video.

I've just checked oil and car says under filled. I shall get some more tomorrow to put in and see how long it lasts.

I've already emailed everything to the garage, but does anyone have an idea of where the issue may lie? Are there any common failure points ?

At the risk of repeating something Craig mentioned on another thread, pipe onto the back of the EGR valve.....

Apparently they can leak and spread oil down the back of the engine. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks gents.

I've not seen any other posts.....

Reading on the net I'm not gonna get the right oil at Halfrauds.....

I need to put something in so I can drive it..... Needs acea c1....

Is the pipe to the egr rubber or metal do you know ?

Can you easily get to it ?

No service info for this model. Used to use RAVE.

I've no idea how to get the acoustic cover off....

Aparently not easy to get to Big Cry

No you can't get it from halfords, they don't do it, needs to be to WSS m2c934b spec. Shel helix ultra professional AF-L specifically. Thumbs Up

Real bummer that, hope they sort it for you.

This is the thread I'm talking about, to get the cover off the engine just lift up, pops off. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It seems to me that you've had / have a few issues with this car - surely the dealer needs to sort it ??

Sorry for asking this, but are you absolutely sure you haven't bought a 'bad-un' - do you need to be considering getting very 'heavy' with the supplying dealer and perhaps pushing for a refund ?

There is an engine oil feed pipe into the back of the EGR with a 10p oil ring seal that fails... Just a pointer for you if the oil filter housing is good... A video boroscope helps track these type of leaks down sir...

Thanks. I don't think it's a wrong un as the other bits are sorted bar the mirror glass, and that wasn't the cars fault. Juddering was rear wheel balancing.

At least I have an idea of what it could be.

Will obviously speak to garage on Monday but as they are 70 miles away, I'll want it fixed at the normal garage I use up here.

Perhaps it's not quite as bad as it looks as oil does tend to spread quite well on a hot surface.... Wishful thinking perhaps. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Not saying it's a wrong un mark, probably just stuff which wasn't noticed by the former keeper, most folks aren't as diligent as us forum types Rolling Eyes

You will want that glass doing by them...... Was quoted £274 by LR to replace mine Shocked

How is is showing under filled? Ok the leak looks fairly bad but it would need it to dump over a litre of oil out of the car to go from full to under fill and it had just been serviced. And as bad as that looks it doesn't look like a litre! Get the top cover off the engine and have a look.

You can pick up the boroscopes Craig mentions for quite reasonable price from many plumbers and builders merchants Thumbs Up about £60 should get one, I got one for finding pipes and cables that the plasterers had "hidden" in the walls! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I put about 2 litres of oil in to get it to the max level. I know it holds 9....

Done about 30 mile.

Not checked it again yet.

There are drops of oil on my workshop floor though...from Tuesday onwards..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Ok..... It's still on Max...

So perhaps not pouring out like I initially thought it could be......

Can't see how it's been serviced oil wise though, or it wasn't checked level wise properly....

I'll speak with my garage man and the selling dealer tomorrow.

Thanks. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

make sure to check when warm according to the manual. 3.6 cold, 4.4 warm for some reason. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If I'm right the type of fitting CTC is talking about is a plastic push on one, with a squeeze release on either side, the rubber o rings in them can compress and leak, I have a similar though less messy leak on the one for the bottom of the dip stick tube on mine. I think you can just pop the o ring out an replace with one of the correct size, so if it is that which is leaking at least the parts bill would be small. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thats the one Mr NMJ Thumbs Up

If you have an “O ring kit” the “O ring” you need to replace is a standard size Thumbs Up
