Noise from Gearbox - When placed in park & when engine o

Hi all,

My car has developed an unsettling noise - Sometimes, not all the time, when I'm driving around I'll then slow down and place the car in park for example if I'm stuck in dead traffic, then I'll get the little 'clunk' that you feel like a knock or faint shudder almost this happens - maybe 6/10 times of trying to make it repeat itself.
However when I come to turn the car off after running, I then wait for maybe 3-5 seconds and hear a 'clunk' again from under the car, it's got to be gearbox related but I can't think what or why it's doing it.

I haven't noticed any issues with gearbox selection, performance, no noises through gears, no whines, grinds or anything, literally only being placed in park and turning the engine off causes the 'clunk'.

Any advice would be massively appreciated - thanks

Car is a 2006 4.2 Supercharged if that helps - cheers

No problem, it certainly is bizarre, hopefully it remains unserious - I'm going to take it to the local independent this weekend, so I'll keep my eye & ear on it & report back....

That does sound strange. A fairly common issue with early 6HP26 transmissions relates to the fretting corrosion of the output shaft spline (where it engages into the transfer box shaft) due to insufficient or no Weicon anti-seize paste being used on assembly.

Could the noise possibly relate to the driveline settling onto the park lock gear (which is right next to the spline) and it’s the clearance being taken up in the worn spline that you feel/hear?

Sorry, I realise that’s a real long shot!

Phil

Hi Phil - that's quite a reply thanks, hopefully it's nothing mechanical, I don't know if there is a pressure which builds inside the gearbox when the engine is on and it's in drive, to then switch to Park & or Engine off which causes the pressure drop / change which leads to the 'clunk'.
I'm actually going to consider a gearbox service due to mileage (119k) which I think consists of oil flush and new filter & sump, I can't imagine that hurting anything other than the wallet - Any ideas roughly how much that would set me back?
Thanks in advance

There is a thread on here somewhere from a chap who was having a similar problem on his 4.4 tdv8, I think the outcome was that it was transfer box related, but as it was under warranty it was replaced by LR so I don't think there was any further info. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Turns out it was the transfer box Crying or Very sad , after getting the vehicle up on the ramps and checking the oil in the transfer box presented a grey-ish liquid (due to mechanical fillings) with a low viscosity. Not good news, so rather than change the fluids, the whole box is getting replaced over the weekend.
Not the best news, but it happens.
Thanks for the input guys.

just for info, when mine was leaking I spoke to these chaps who seemed to carry DD295s on the shelf for £800.

http://www.awtransmissions.co.uk/newparts.html never used them in the end just remembered that they seemed to have them for a good price. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
