Car idles rough then revs drop and it stalls

Hi everybody

I have been tinkering with my brothers RR vogue l322 on and off for a while now and after connecting the OBD to the car had a few faults I need some help with.

Jobs done so far:
- replaced timing chain guides
- replaced main timing chain
- replaced chain tensioners
- set timing chain timing with timing kit
- replaced cam position sensors

Car starts easy however it doesn't run very well, when it idles it's rough and after a few minutes stalls.

The OBE II scan on a live test shows

Fuel sys 1 : fault ?
Fuel sys 2 : fault ?

I took the fuel relay out and tested that the fuel pump was starting (and it is I can hear make noise)
I also pushed the valve on the fuel pipe on top of the engine ( fuel came out)

I have checked for air/vac leaks on hoses so far I cannot find any leaks.

Does anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance

Ps: I am trying to get the car running nice to present it to him next Friday as a surprise 40th birthday gift Smile

What model, engine and year are we talking?

Did it run ok before all the work on timing chains etc?

Petrol or deisel? Size of engine and model year? These are pretty key pieces of info to anyone trying to help you.

But of it ran before you replaced the timing chains and other work you say you have done, then first thing I would do is retrace your steps. Have you managed to somehow get the timing gear slightly off, or is the new sensor duff or is something you had to remove to get into the engine to change these not put back properly or been damaged?

2002 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Epsom Green

A quick check is connector on the throttle body which is easily knocked if climbing on the engine to get over the back and gives the symptoms you describe if not fully connected.

Thanks everybody for the posts.

So the car is a 2002 RR vogue petrol L322.

The fuel is old maybe 6-8 months however I would still think it would have some spark??

A lot of hoses and plugs were disconnected at the front of the engine when we did the chains and I am working through double checking them all.

How do I check the MAF is operating correctly ?

Today I put new fuel in and and reset the ECU.
( correct me if I'm wrong , i held the accelerator down turned the ignition on for ten seconds, then turned the ignition off and took my foot off the gas pedal)
- I charged the battery
- removed at re seated the intake ducting

I started the car and let it idle for 10 mins observing the revs and listening to the engine.
The motor sounded ok - not perfect as there was a slight tappet sound.

With a short rev of the motor in PARK it sounded good and strong, I drove it backwards and forwards a few times and the power seems normal. I am reluctant to drive it around the block as the OBD II was showing a fuel fault.

At the front of the car the motor is running reasonably good with a slight tappet noise and at the back of the car the exhaust is making more of an inconsistent noise.

I have posted photos of the OBDII in my gallery if anyone who's how to translate them into lay men's terms...

Air leak, maybe around where the inlet pipe meets the throttle body or various small pipes
Small electrical connectors that connect to each injector can get bent over when reconnecting

I did snap a small hard line and re connected with rubber maybe there is another hole
