Coolant leak

I noticed whilst doing an oil change on our motor a slight coolant leak.
It is somewhere around the oil filter area.
Looking down on the oil filter whilst fitting the new filter, I saw what looked to be orange paint/sealant around the base of the filter holder.
It doesn't look to be on top of the block, but until I remove some brackets and wires, I can't pinpoint where it might be coming from.
Its not much, using/loosing around 1/2 litre in a month.

I investigated the coolant leak yesterday (Sat) and after around an 1-1/2 of removing pipes, covers, cables and brackets, I came across the thermostat housing.

Looking closer and drying off the housing I pressurised the cooling system and saw a small leak of coolant from the area circled.

This was under a pressure of 20 psi, the coolant tank cap states 16 psi.
I would thing that under normal operating pressure and a warmed up engine, the crack would expand causing an even greater leak.
I a week of using the vehicle, the water level has dropped around an inch from the cold fill level mark, so looks like a new thermostat housing along with a couple of dubious hoses. A PO or someone has had a go at repairing other areas of the assembly as there is what looks like black sealant near to some hoses.

On a further note I also noticed that the nearside bank intake manifold has a nice dry but sooty coating to the inside of the pipe connectors.

The offside bank is wet sticky soot.

Could this be pointing to a turbo issue?
Car does not use any oil or has any blue smoke from the exhaust.
