tyre options 20" for L322

All

Our new '07 FF L322 came with 20" Continental Cross Contacts (255/50/20) on the front and some Nexen Rodians on the back.
I have a particular hate for mismatched tyres so will look to resolve this.
I am also a tight git so tend to buy part worns/almost new tyres/sets of wheels and tyres where possible. Did I mention I'm a tight git?!

I do not want to change wheel size to anything bigger as I can't see the point of having a big 4x4 that cant cope with a little bit of snow. I need to be able to stay mobile in bad weather, that is one of the reasons for buying.

So, the RR will do about 13k miles a year. 3k of that will be a pan-european trip in the summer. As I said, I absolutely must be able to stay mobile in the winter. Most of the ten k miles apart from the occasional motorway trip will be local.

I've done some searching on here without success.

What would you guys recommend ? A good all-purpose tyre for all year round (if so, what?), or a set of winters, and a set of summers (again, what?)?

Pirelli Scorions seem to be the best all rounder.

Also worth looking in the 255 55 20 size - that's what the L405 uses and there seem to be quite a few cheaper offerings in that size.

The speedo difference from the 50's seems marginal & people are reporting better ride quality.

i agree with alistair , the 255 55 20 is getting popular with the L322 owners....the was obviously why LR increased the tyre profile from 50 to 55 and was to give a more comfortable ride..i have seen 'take off' sets of 4 selling for £200 on ebay recently.. ... - .- -.

So they're ok for all year round? Nice and quiet?
Noted about the 55's - there are loads on the 'bay, although they seem to be Scorpion Verde not Scorpion Zero ????

Verde are an all season tyre, but are a little more road biased, the zeros are technically
Summer tyres and are the original fittment, LR are fitting verdes to loads of cars nowadays, personally I prefer the original spec firemen of zeros on 255/50. But each to their own. Thumbs Up

I have used the zeros all year round in the Uk with no probs. I suppose it depends on where you live and how much really cold weather you have? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The answer is not much!! Only had half a dozen frosts and one minor bit of snow this winter. But......3/4 years ago we had a lot of snow and would have been stranded were it not for the Disco 2 we had at the time. We live at the top of a hill which can become fairly impassible when the weather goes like that.
In addition my company (landscaping) operates a winter salting/clearing service which is fairly useless if I can't get down to the yard !!!

Quite a few folks do run winters all year round, which will give the winter grip you might need. Or you could just fit scorpions and get a set of chains to get you out of trouble should you need to, which is what I do.

Ran winters last year and tbh where I live they made little difference, and this year it has only been cold enough to warrant them on 2 mornings so far..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I run winters from Nov/Dec through to March - I have 2 sets of wheels & swap them over myself.

It's a personal preference thing - but I like to know that I have the best possible.

This winter I thought that winters were a complete waste of time, until driving to the ski resort last week. Just north of Lyon we hit a heavy snow/sleet storm that covered the motorway white.

Then when we got to the resort there was slush part way up the mountain, that thickened to compacted snow as we got higher up.

You never really know whether you would have been OK on regular tyres, but in both instances, I was glad that I had winters fitted and was in the best state I could be in.

For the resort, I could have hinted the chains & most people were, but I was getting no slip at all, so didn't bother Thumbs Up

If you're not doing many summer miles, then winters all year may be a reasonable option.

I ran Vredesteins on my L322 with 20's - I have Conti Winters on the L405

I'm a fan of fitting winters for the cold months and running 2 sets. But it's getting back towards summer time and the summer 20s will be going on.

They came with 255/55r20, the larger size as mentioned, and I don't like them. Whether it's the tyres design (Goodyear) or the size format in general, mine just inspire no confidence in cornering. Its almost like the rear side wall buckles and the backend falls away fromitself giving the feeling it's about to loose it.

So really considering back to 255/50r20.... And if that's the case, I can't really see much past the pirelli scorpion zeros. Across the various land rover err s I've had, they have been consistently very very good. V8 or else ...

Scorpions seem to be getting the most praise.
I dont mind running winters/summers. But if the scorpions are winters anyway and good in the summer anyway there seems little point?

I put a new set of Toyo's 255 50 20 on my Supercharged when I bought it. Blackcircles have them at £104 a corner so pretty cheap. Scorpions are £141.

That's a delivered price so you need to add whatever your local tyre fitter will charge per corner.

A lot of the X5 boys would swear by Toyo's. Not surprising when Michelins were £325 on the rears.

I've found the Toyo's on mine to be excellent in rain and ice. No snow yet and unlikely this year now. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

Hi jonnyboy, if your're as a tight git you says, I suggest you get another vehicle instead of the FFRR Rolling Eyes

And if you want to have ONE set of tyres you should have a good winter tyre, but remember thesewill have lost most of their good properties when they are about 5 years old and come down to 6 mm thread. But will always be better than a corresponding summer tyre during winter.

For myself I have a FullFat because it't the best and top of the line. Same goes with tyres, Nokian (265/50/20) for winters and for summers I will probably get a set of General Grabber AT, because I belive that's the only AT tyre I can get in a good size. (255/55/20)

Wish there was a GoodYear Duratrac in 20", or even better, a AT tyre which would be winter approved, have not found any yet. Supporter and maintainer of EDF - Mrs Edfors' shopping cart.
