Alternator testing

Chaps

Had a couple of issues with the FF. Partly self inflicted with the fph but that's a side issue Embarassed

Was all set to replace the battery but it isn't looking that old and is a Bosch s5.

Jumped the motor, it's been idling for a bit with all consumers off.

Put everything on I could - lights/heated screen/f + r blowers/f & r heated seats.

12.29v shows on my multimeter across the posts.

Does this mean new alternator time? I actually have my mobile guy here on Friday doing some non-urgent work on another car so need to get this in place quickly as a switcharoo of jobs if it needs doing.

TIA

Sounds low - should be around 13.5v with a reasonable load.

2007 seems to have been a bad year for alternators - some die slowly - mine just failed - fortunately the car was on the drive, but in an hour or so it completely killed the battery & the car was immovable.

If in doubt, I would get it done - mine cost about £500 fitted.

You seem to be suffering the 2007 alternator failure scenario. 12.29V is way too low even with the load you describe and the engine idling.

Yes I thought it was low.
Been pricing alternators but unsure yet whether 6 or 8 rib belt.
My local supplier only does Denso ones - but I see there are cheaper variants about.
Anyone got experience of the cheapies? 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted
