Steering wheel controls intermittent operation

I have noted for a while now that the controls on my steering wheel have not been working all the time - sometimes the stereo ones work sometimes not and its getting worse. The heated wheel seems to work ok but the cruise has never worked.

Would I be right in assuming something is worn, and is it a DIY fix or because of the airbag should I leave it to somebody that knows what they are at? It's not the end of the world as having an aftermarket stereo I have a remote for it (and can reach it ok anyway) and I've never had cruise before so I don't miss it

There is a ring I believe that contacts the connectors, so they work wherever the wheel is turned to. That wears if I remember right.

There is a procedure to remove the airbag that involves disconnecting the battery and leaving for 30 mins before you do anything. I took mine off when I changed steering wheels on my old car. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

As above... Its called a “slip ring” its basically a printed ribbon that tightens or loosens dependant on which way you turn your steering wheel Thumbs Up They break down with age... Sometimes! Whistle

It will need replacing as the next thing will be the dreaded “airbag fault” and an MOT failure!

Easy enough DIY job if your confident but if your not sir... Leave it to the professionals as its airbag... Rolling Eyes

If replacing with new, they are a fair few hundred quid Shocked If replacing with a guaranteed used item? Make sure it has the heated steering wheel function! As many didn’t sir Thumbs Up

Righty Ho then - a case of "it's broke but don't fix it" Laughing I'll leave well alone until (if) the airbag warning light comes on) as i said it's not essential at the moment so i can do without it.
