Does anyone know anything about Mercedes ML's? cos the club

Hi all, well it's with mixed emotions that I find myself typing here... As some of you will be aware I when out and in desperation got an ML270 CDI Manual to tow with, cos the ffrr turns it's nose up at towing toilets Evil or Very Mad

Yes the car has a few niggles, and the fact that I got change from 2k, it doesn't actually surprise me. But, what does surprise me is the quality and level of unhelpfulness of the Mercedes Forum.... I said Hello and a few (5) replied, I asked about a Mercedes equivalent to a Gap IID tool 3 peep's suggested the Factory MB Star set up Shocked I can get a dealer IID for that and have change.... and a few others said iCarsoft Shocked Shocked got one of those for the ffrr....... I'm sooo impressed with it that I went and got a IID tool Rolling Eyes and when I asked just what the iCarsoft thing would do..... Blank Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I have also asked about rear speaker upgrades, Whistle it would seam that no one uses the radio in their Merc Whistle And I got the same amount of help when enquiring about reversing cameras..... they obviously don't do backwards either Banging Head Banging Head

I'm beginning to thing that they all drive AMG's and don't know where the oil goes let alone anything useful, Can we start a Manual ML section on here? Please, Please, Pretty Please Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I was on http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums for quite a while (still a member), found usefulness varied a lot. Which one did you use?

Find Martin's forums easily the best car ones. Graham

I'm on both the mbclub.co.uk and .com, both are next to useless..... either they are very much cheaper to run than a ffrr, or they attract the sort of non technical bods who only want to talk about polish and alloy wheels Evil or Very Mad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Go away traitor, we don't want you on here any more.... Shocked Shocked

I have to agree I've had a few Merc's and the forums are next to useless, they don't want to mod or improve them just drive them and talk about car polish....

Was on an American one which had the most info, can't remember the name now....

The ML was made for the american market, in fact it's made there I think, always thought they weren't a patch on any other Merc.. Having said that if you forget they are supposed to be a Merc, then they are OK and do the job.... they just don't feel like a Merc, can't go wrong for less than £2k though Thumbs Up

I befriended a local Merc specialist and used his diagnostics, tenner a time, think it was cheaper than an IID over 18 months...

Now go away and don't come back....

Stan, hit the "BAN" button..... Rolling with laughter Pete

I'm reluctant to put my head above the parapet here…..MBClub has over 90,000 members of which there are a number of 'old school' DIY mechanic gurus BUT any response is dependent on A. the question not being lost in the blizzard and B. if the members who know seeing your post……most use the New Post function because there are so many posts/topics on a daily basis. Granted, they have had a huge influx of 'car renters' who have very little interest in repairing or modifying, a fact oft discussed and much lamented by the 'old guard.'

Autell used to make a fairly well regarded model…….don't know if it has been upgraded but I think it is only available second hand in its original form.

Using the search function on MBClub, this link came up from 2015 for a 2000MY GL which might be useful----
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/1859...eader.html

As for speakers, what are you trying to do/what is the question? Assuming you are looking to replace the original with better units, could you not remove an existing one, see what the sizes are and buy a suitable replacement?

If you want top notch advice on ICE for your car, Alfie (Mark) or Richard at http://comand.co.uk at THE people to talk to. They are based in Lightwater, Surrey and I am happy to recommend them for MB upgrades. They also have an online site which may list the available options https://www.commandonline.co.uk

I do understand your frustration with both those sites. I hardly ever use the official club site and won't be renewing my club membership this year. As for the MBClub site, when I joined, there was an active panel of gurus and it was great to learn from them. Unfortunately, like most clubs, between personality clashes and people choosing to spend their time elsewhere, a number have taken more of a backseat which is a real shame. There is still some great advice to be had but it isn't as easy to find as it used to be.

EDIT: Reversing cameras--from what I can remember, it depends on what head unit you have. Some have a socket which can be used so the image shows on the NTG screen. I have read that some have successfully fitted cheap cameras from the bay, both wired and wireless types. Alfie & Richard will know exactly what you can/can't use…….apologies if this seems vague but the MB COMAND was available in NTG1,2,2.5,3,4 and I think now, 5 as well.

I'm on both of the main UK forums, have been for a few years now, and must admit that some members can be curt to the point of rudeness, usually the newer ones, though http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php? has a lot of helpful people. As for diagnostic tools, they really are very limited, with STAR (now Xentry) being the best. I personally just use an ELM 327 in the OBD port of mine with Torque Pro on the phone, which is limited, but it has found a few issues for me. It's mainly used for data logging though.

No idea with the speakers, mine are HK and fine for my cloth ears, but the reversing camera is apparently a nightmare to retro fit, dependant upon the level of kit you have to start with. http://www.comand.co.uk/ are the people for this, but don't expect this to be cheap. Shocked

Some of us over there do drive AMGs, Wink with several of us spending most of our time modding them. Cool

We're not all bad I promise you, just that the right person hasn't yet seen your post and possibly the idiots got there first. Oh, and I do know where the oil goes in mine, you get used to topping it up on an AMG Laughing

ETA: Beaten again, must type quicker. Mr. Green

I think that the biggest problem with the MBclub is there are no model specific areas, and from what I can see it all seams to get lost in a mess of ABCEMS class Shocked

The speaker upgrade is being dealt with, the addition of some 6.5" Pioneer speakers and some surround adapters in the front will do nicely Very Happy , but can I find something to go in the rear doors Shocked the bloody speaker doesn't even exist in the NSR Evil or Very Mad I did read on a very old thread that the fronts could be made to fit the back doors... But when I asked the question if you had to hack up the door frame to get them to fit........ Yup that was all I got.......... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

So the plan is to fit the new ones in the front and then find out what's causing the Triphonic sound effects and sort it, with a view to fitting some more Pioneer 6.5" speakers in the rear doors.

FYI my beasty is one grade above an MB track, and as such comes with single cone full range speakers Shocked and one of those has started the buzz Evil or Very Mad

The OBD II reader is a little more of an issue, as a lot of the earlier Mercedes Diesels didn't speak OBD, and the 2000 model is the crossover year Big Cry But as I have one of those ELM327 things that don't bloody work with the Tractor powered ffrr, I will give it a try, the only problem is it's in the centre console of the ffrr and it's up a ramp having gearbox surgery, Banging Head Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
