More sat nav issues

Since my sat nav started playing up, I tried another DVD, to no avail, so my dilemma is, do I fork out for a repair/replacement of the DVD reader, to maintain the integrated look, or consign the already dated system to the scrap heap and get hold of a TomTom or Gamin and put it on Brodit clip to minimise it's "add-on" look?

I've already got Navmii and Waze on my iPad but I don't really find them very conducive to using while driving and the iPad is too big to position safety. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

its frustrating that we cant 'feed' a signal from another make of sat nav and have it on the main screen..

tomtom/garmin is a viable route to take and you dont need to have it to much on display if you use a vent mount like i have with my very cheap chinese nav using igo primo maps..

I work in the connected vehicle / IoT sector. I won't plug the company I work for here but I would say that the navigation manufacturers' core business is to make these products; it's their bread and butter, it's what they do all day every day and the end result is generally a very positive user experience especially when you take into account the complex algorithm surrounding historical traffic patterns, live traffic, road closures etc.

Land Rover make vehicles (and some would argue that they do not do a very good job of that!) - that is their core business. So any in-built navigation is never going to shine, it's just a box ticking exercise.

Land Rover makes cars
Navigation manufacturers make sat navs

I can tell you with my professional hat on that many of the systems to even new vehicles are well below par. The systems fitted to older cars (i.e. mine is 2006) is a joke – Shockingly bad!

.....so my opinion is always to buy from those who do it best. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Stan - how did you attach your GPS?

You mentioned in another post cable ties.... is the GPS cradle just cable tied into the vent? or are you using a vent type universal mount? Looking at securing my Garmin on the drive south when i pick up my new baby.... 3 weeks and counting! given that Romania had not even thought about motorways in 2012...it may be useful... Series 2a LWB Hardtop - ex British Aerospace that was then used in an armed robbery! not by me!

In addition to the built in unit which does a reasonable if not basic job imho we all have google maps live navigation with live traffic info inbuilt into the mapping on our phones which look like sat navs...

Why do we need a seperate sat nav?

I see no need for a separate Sat Nav and neither do these guys...

my trusty sat nav - whilst uptodate with the vagaries of revised road planning in Germany and Romania - also holds the way points to my favorite overnight stops in small Bavarian beer houses! Not done the drive for a couple of years - so have a night of catching up in a wonderful small bar in Hungary as well - next to a nursing college... as it happens...
And my phone is encased in an otterbox case that does not fit in mounts well.... and getting caught juggling it can get expensive
Sure the LR mapping will do well generally - but it would be nice to have the assistance without sticking a mount onto the windscreen....that you have cleaned so well.... Series 2a LWB Hardtop - ex British Aerospace that was then used in an armed robbery! not by me!
