FFRR vs Volvo V40 Cross Country - A Close Shave!

Driven this junction roughly 4000 times over the last 10 years, the road to the right was clear for 800 yards back up the hill. 50 mph limit on this main road, which is what the Transit was doing. Yes, with hindsight I should have stopped and looked both ways ( I do now!) Shame we can't see the face of the Volvo driver Smile Excuse the language!! Embarassed

A surprisingly common one that - I learnt a long time ago to watch out for right turns whilst overtaking - I learnt through a similar near miss......

Surely with t he centre road markings that is an illegal place to overtake anyway? I thought that the central marked area was a refuge for cars turning right off the main road.
I'd have a trip to the local plod with that video!

They are broken white lines, hazard lines with a cross hatched area, totally legal to overtake on, the highway code says you should "avoid" these areas it does not say you shouldn't drive on them.

If there had been an accident then Joe would have been at fault, and lets face it most of us have done that at times....

As to overtaking then an age old adage is... You may be able to come up with a 1000 reasons to overtake...BUT... If you can come up with ONE reason not to then don't....!!! Pete

Agree - the cross hatching is somewhat meaningless - it's the surrounding line that's important - the long line is a hazard line, but completely legal to cross - and therefore overtake. If it was surrounded by a solid line, then no overtaking.

I have learn't to look both ways just like Joe, a near miss - although overtaking across a junction is not to be recommended. Geoff

I genuinely thought it was illegal to overtake at any junction... Anyway, if it's not illegal it's still bloody stupid!! Previously..

There are lots of "rumours" about where you can't do this and that, it's because the highway code is not all law but "best practice" as well....

You can cross any line that isn't an unbroken one..... you can drive on cross hatching as long as it hasn't an unbroken line....

You can also overtake on a solid line if the vehicle is excessively slow, road roller, slow farm vehicle etc...

When pulling out at a junction it is your responsibility to give way to traffic on the main road, it doesn't say the traffic has to be on the right side of the road or even what the traffic is... i.e. vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian...

My favourite pet hate is the lack of knowledge regarding the national speed limit on divided dual carriageways, a divided dual carriageway is a two lane road with a central reservation, i.e. you can't drive onto the other carriageway... It does not have to have two lanes each way, dual refers to one lane each way.... so the national limit is 70mph not 60... or even 50 which most people think it is on the few round here..... Pete

Sadly you'd have been the one at fault, but most important you are not hurt and neither is the car. I have been in a similar low speed bump recently and I'm the one bearing the brunt of a w Censored r with a whiplash claim.

Complacent as you know the area so well, listening to the toff on the radio, not expecting a foolish overtaking manouvre to happen....it is almost exactly the same as mine, albeit in rush hour crawling traffic Big Cry Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........
