Estimated range display

Anyone know how the tank range displayed on the console is calculated?

Is it purely based on how much fuel is left in the tank or does it take your current consumption into account?

Recently after filling the tank to the brim it claimed total range was 780km but I remember some time ago (probably over a year ago now) seeing just over 900km displayed after a fill-up so I was wondering what could cause this? If it takes current consumption into account and the consumption of my current trip was poor, maybe that might explain the drop in range. Can't understand it if it's purely based on how full the tank is... 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

As I understand it:

It bases it on how much fuel is in the tank factored against your current running average mpg. Now I dont think its your trip average that you can reset, but an internal running average over the last X amount of miles travelled I think. If you drive frugally, then you'll see the range go up pretty quickly, even if the trip counter mpg average doesn't change much at all. At least thats what mine is like anyway.

It works out your mpg through knowing how far you've travelled versus how much fuel it *thinks* its pumped in through the injectors. I say thinks because it calculates that amount of fuel based on the injector timings. i.e. if i open the injector for 50ms then X amount of fuel will be delivered. . . . . when in reality the amount of fuel might be slightly different than X . . . with so many injections made over the time of calculating the average, those small differences may add up . . . . which is why the trip computer average, and the real world tank to tank calculated average by a driver can differ. V8 or else ...

Not sure how far back the average goes though.

IIRC the maximum it will display is 1000km - 621 miles - I used to be able to get it to display that occasionally after a fill up, but it soon went down rapidly once I started to drive as normal Whistle

Ah, now I get you. I'm in Germany but I've never done the former but often do the latter Laughing

Will have to start checking the range more often after filling up to see how much it varies. Though, if it's always around the 800km mark instead of 900km like a couple of years ago is that a sign my engine isn't as efficient as it once was?

Cheers for the feedback. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

Many years ago my Uncle was fined for having a puncture on the Autobann, and stopping to change the wheel... I don't know if they have changed their rules, but then it was illegal to stop what ever the cause.... don't know if you'd be fined for having an accident Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
