Do you keep the spare near the car? Mine was doing this the other day when SWMBO had a spare in her handbag, so we had 2 keys in the car. Obviously the new battery could well be crap?

I recall a post on here a while ago in which the first (cheap) battery didn't solve the problem but a Duracell one did. Only Range Rovers since 1988

See the notes below it's a Dealer Special Service Bulletin I found on another forum... The advice given to press twice worked for me.

Issue
When the " Smart key battery low" message is displayed in the instrument pack message center dealers are complaining that after a replacement battery has been fitted the message does not disappear. The dealer then replaces the key in the belief that the key is faulty.

Cause
Dealers are swapping batteries from known good smart keys to diagnose battery low message or fitting aged batteries off the shelf. The message is displayed when the smart key voltage threshold has dropped below 2.44 volts. The message will clear if the smart key battery threshold is higher than 2.95 volts.
Note: these voltages are only measurable when the battery is inserted in the smart key.
Action
When the " Smart key battery low" message is displayed in the instrument pack message center dealer technicians and customers must fit a NEW still in the packet battery.
Under no circumstances should you swap batteries from a known "good" smart key.
LR part number is YWK10003L. (battery type CR2032)
Please note: CR2032 batteries stored in high humidity +75% & at high ambient temperatures greater then (+25degC) will greatly reduce its shelf life.
After replacement of the battery two smart key authentications need to take place to clear the message and to recognize the new battery voltage.
This is achieved by pressing any button on the smart key twice.
If the "Smart key battery low" message does not clear in the message center fit another new battery and retry.
If the "Smart key battery low" message is still present please replace the smart key, submit an EPQR and retain the smart key and all associated batteries for investigation. Please label the original battery and replaced battery separately.

Thanks all - will try shiny brand new battery (not one that I admit was sitting in the drawer for a year) and see if it works.

The only bit missing from this topic is how to get into the fob itself to change the battery. This Youtube video shows you how. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black
