Just ordered a wheel nut key (£15 from LR!!) - BMW won't supply without a VIN, At least I'll be able to get the wheels off tomorrow and start getting some penetrating fluid on the strut bolts. Also a jack pad off eBay for a little better contact with my trolley jack.

I'd quite like to make a proper test rig for the transfer motor if I can work out what connector will fit nicely, then make a small loom with a two way switch so I can motor it either way. I might pop it off later and take a trip to Maplins. Yes, it's overkill, but I'd expect it to cost pence and I don't fancy the risk of sparks under the car.

Just got my iCarsoft tool and jack pad. I hope the weather lets up enough to let me get the transfer box motor on and get testing.

The iCarsoft tool is really useful! I can show live data like the transfer box motor potentiometer resistance, when the switch is calling for a range change etc. as well as codes!

Hopefully the transfer box is OK now (see other thread), cooling sorted, and suspension bits and filters to finish the service will be here tomorrow.

I cleared the EAS codes to get the compressor running again, and the front corner came up to height and stayed there. I think the split is only opened at full extension, such as when I jacked it up.

I also found some other codes...
Electric thermostat circuit fault - last occurrence, plausibility I will look further...
Passenger door central locking mechanism - short circuit. Same for drivers' door. Does that explain my lack of key operation? Wiring fail?
Interior security - fuse or cable. No idea.

Any ideas?

Electric thermostat circuit fault, is probably the plug that plugs into the engine thermostat it's not that important and does very little... especially if you do the thermostat upgrade to the 80deg one...

If the door locks are playing up get them changed a.s.a.p.if they fail in the dead lock position you will have to cut the door up..!!! Pete

Locks are OK, just the key doesn't open/lock from outside.

Search for re-synch key threads, it's quite easy, but read the process two or three times, as it's sort of hard to 'do it' first time..
And 10x batteries off eBay for £1, and you are good to go?

Also if no key red light, might need a take apart and spirit clean of contacts. -again, read threads as there is a tiny plastic shard in the key, that must go back in.

Yes, the physical key not the remote. I suspect the typical BMW lock failure.

This morning so far - pollen filter and air filter done. The pollen filter was in backwards and full of tree droppings! Britpart pollen filters do not have a flow direction on.

I got the car jacked and wheel off ready to do the suspension, then found I don't have an 18mm socket. Stupid me.

I gave up with the suspension. Having discovered that Halfords don't sell and 18mm socket I'm going to get Aylmer to do it when they do the exhaust.

Took the drivers' lock out and it's not broken, so it's something inside the door or the door module. Off to google... And got the rear console trim off to paint.

The door lock turned out to be the easiest fix so far. The lock itself has a thing on the end kind of like a cross-head screwdriver which engages with a microswich in the door. The part that connects to the barrel has some movement in it, a bit like a wobbly extension. So, when the lock is inserted, it drops down under the microswitch. It just needs guiding in with the door panel off, now it works fine!

Most of us, have a few problems, getting our new toy into proper running order. And you know to yourself, that each bit is checked and done. Whilst checking these bits, we have opportunities to check other things, like brake pad wear, and small rust areas , and gremlins. Don't worry too much about getting a long list. Not all the jobs you talk of are necessary, some are cosmetic..
Rest assured, you are being a conscientious owner, unlike the previous one. Without say, this forum, and your own pride, you could have driven it into deeper trouble, and expense.
I did loads of little jobs on mine. And (touch wood) trust it completely now. ( bar the blasted battery!)
It's not been a walk in the woods, but it's been so much cheaper than the typical carefree previous owners type experience.
He spent a fortune, and it still let him down. (The labour costs add up to something like 9k)

Keep the faith, and take your time, and read up on here.
This has saved me so much guesswork.
