United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Zermatt Silver
Age old question: Vogue V6 or SDV8?

Hi, as the title says what do I go for?

I'm looking at used L405's, 2015 plate, budget around £65-70K ish. My current drive is a 90k mile 3.6 TDV8 on an 09 plate with a JE chip which gives it a little more get up and go compared to the 3.6 in standard tune. But the car is really due for a change before anything 'big' starts to happen to it and with an MOT looming in May plus and inspection 2 and some more winter tyres to be considered for next season, perhaps now is the time to pull the trigger and change.

So the new purchase would be our primary car. It will be used mainly for long drives and would spend around 15 weeks per year in France around the Alps. So I wanted something which handles well and is not like a barge around tight mountain roads so I was thinking the V8 may better BUT then the V6 is slightly more frugal and is the lower kerb weight maybe an added benefit?

Part of me wants a V6 with stability control but thats not possible but then would the V6 be lacking in power as I estimate it will be slower than my current model?

I know the subject has been done on here before, but as the L405 has been around for 3 or so years there may be some forumites who have owned both a V6 and a V8 and could give some valuable feedback which would be very handy - but I think I know the what the suggested engine size choice will be !!!

thanks Richard

Ive said it before and my view has NOT changed! The V6 is quieter, more refined and when pushed, the lower nose weight stops it “washing out”

And compared to your current 3.6 Whistle either will leave it for dead sir Thumbs Up

Go the SD V8 great torque when needed is not noisy and is very good on fuel for long trips I get around ten litres per hundred kilometres in Australian conditions. Thats not bad for two plus ton car.

I test drove both and bought the TDV6 because it's a lot more refined than the V8. It does roll a bit more, but it feels lighter and more nimble. Having said that I'll probably go V8 next time just for a change. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either. The V6 is certainly quick enough, noticeably quicker than a 322 3.6 V8.

I wish the'd fit the SDV6 from the Sport with the anti-roll, but that would eat V8 sales.

The other bonus of the V6 is that it's economical, if you're into that sort of thing. Mine gets 30-40MPG.

That's very interesting , as I tow the max 3.5 ton now and then I've only been looking for a TDV8 , it's the week gear box that worries me in the TD6 Confused

Thanks chaps, I seems the V6 is popular choice, and that is echoed in the used market, unless everyone is selling V6's to buy V8's!! I suppose the V6 could be chipped once out of warranty if I needed more.

Interesting about washing out, that's a significant characteristic of the L322 and not just on roundabouts......

But I think I'm leaning to a V6 and given my wife drives it mainly avec les enfants the performance envelope doesn't really get threatened and the additional V8 performance would likely be wasted

Thanks Angel for your input, it would have been shock of the year if you had suggested anything other than a 5.0 Laughing

I guess with a 2015 plate car what MY is that likely to be MY14.5, 15, 15.5?, I'm not up to speed in this area?

That would be MY15 or MY15.5. I bought mine March last year, and it's one of the first MY15.5

You really need to drive both & make up your own mind Thumbs Up

I went with the SDV8 as I also do some towing - I'm sure the TDV6 is perfectly adequate, but I didn't want to settle for adequate Twisted Evil

I have owned a L322 3.6 and 4.4 TDV8 both chipped by JE. Now I own a L405 4.4 AB and have driven the L405 V6 over several days.

Performance and torque wise the JE chipped 4.4 is similar to the L405 4.4, except the fuel consumption of the L405 is at least 10% improved.

I found the V6 needed higher revs to achieve similar performance to the 4.4. So all this talk about the V6 being smoother is offset by it being revved harder to achieve the same outcome as the V8. It doesn't make sense to me, and I couldn't wait to get out of the V6 in to a more leisurely, and when needed, more powerful V8. The V6 in the FFRR sn't even the higher BHP version found in th Sport.

The V6 isn't a true FFRR experience IMHO. MY23 D350 HSE
