United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black
4.2 SC Service Schedule / Common Faults

I've been researching the 3.6TDV8 for the last 6 odd months, mentally priming my knowledge of the trials and tribulations of owning one. Now i have decided I'd like to do away with a lot of the worries that come with owning a 3.6, and instead i have now found myself fully convinced the SC is the better option.

However, where the 3.6 has a seemingly standard set of issues you will probably experience as an owner, the 4.2 doesn't seem to conform to that. For example the EGR's and Turbos amongst other things seem to be prone to problems...My research hasn't helped me gauge what problems are common the 4.2 (I'm sure there are some)

What are some common problems on the 4.2?
What are some must-checks on the 4.2 specifically when buying? (Outside of the similarities the TDV8 and SC share)
Can someone also tell me the service schedule for the 4.2? Cannot find it anywhere. Would be nice to know what services look like past 50k miles.

Thanks guys Thumbs Up

I think the main problem is aching face muscles from grinning so much...

Not heard of anything specific, supercharger bearings wear, but can be replaced, and I imagine they get driven hard so check brakes and bushes...

Download the Workshop Manual from the WIKI it will have service details.... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks mate, reading through it now.

Aching face muscles...I'm assuming that goes with the aching hand from constantly holding a petrol pump too? Whistle

some of the issues will be standard FF issues, because not withstanding the engine, the rest of the car is pretty similar.

The gearbox is the same, the brakes are the same, the suspension components are the same, the diffs are similar though the SC would probably have the locking rear Diff, and the transfer boxes are the same. Much of the electronical stuff is the same too. So much of you research will still be valid, just forget the engine stuff.

The engine itself is seems to be fairly fault free, you don't tend to hear of many problems with them, though that could be that there are less of them around than the 3.6, but it could be that there is just less to go wrong on the petrol than the complicated emissions and injection systems on modern diesels. But that said there are loads of high milage 3.6s which have been run without fault too.

The thing with all FFs is you need to buy on condition and history. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well said, thanks for the advice.

Just as a not, I have the full 1300 page Workshop manual, but cannot find the Maintenance Schedule for the Petrols anywhere??
It's listed in the contents and i can see the Diesel section, but not the Petrol section? Strange!

That's the trouble with forums, they can give the impression that particular cars are problematic when statistically they may not be. No arguments the consequences are considerable when things do go wrong.

I too did a bit of research recently on the facelift 1 & 2 petrol L322s. There's almost no info out there about problems.

I keep lusting after a 5.0 na for when the current lease expires in 2019. Or maybe a 4.4, or maybe just keep the well sorted 3.6 I know and love. The current L322 is the best car I've ever driven for touring, beach driving etc. The L322 is an amazing leap in Land Rover heritage, just as the classic, soft dash and P38 were. However, looking after them properly does cost, even when you get a good one.

Good luck with your search. ______________________________
