ZF8 - Preventative Maintenance

First question since joining but I don't get my car until Friday. For owners of TDV8 with ZF8 speed box.

LR say that the ZF 8 speed box doesn't need any maintenance until 150,000 miles, then they recommend a fluid and filter change. Quoted me £950 to do it on my D4.

Other manufacturers that fit this box, BMW, Audi, Chrysler, all say change the fluid every 50,000 miles. 150,000 miles is way more than any ATF can be expected to remain in good shape, particularly if the car is a 4X4 and does any "heavy lifting."

Following a great guide produced by one of the gurus on Disco 4.com, I did a partial fluid change on my D4 at 50,000 miles. You can't do a full flush like you do on the 6 speed because of the way the box is plumbed in, but you can change 50% of the fluid and if you do that twice about 5000 miles apart you get 75% of the old fluid out, better than nothing.

At the moment I don't know how accessible the box is on the FFRR, and won't know until next week, but just wondering if anybody has done this on the FFRR or any other preventative maintenance on the box.

I personally would stick with ZF’s recommendation, which is to change the oil and filter every 50,000 to 75,000 miles (or 8 years).

Only use ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8 in your 8HP70 (the only approved alternative is Petronas Tutela Transmission AS8) and I’d strongly recommend that you avoid using an aftermarket filter/sump pan and only use a genuine IBS/Filtran unit.

Thanks for your input and the service guide. It is the same procedure as in the disco section and the one
I followed on my D4.

I agree about the use of aftermarket products and would only use a LR approved pan and filter. However there is an ATF on the Advanced Factors site by Febi Bilstein that is accredited as compatible with LR 023288 - Lifeguard 8.

It is frustrating that Lifeguard 8 in Germany is available at just over £20 litre yet here it is £56 litre from a LR main dealer.

Shocked Not another gearbox that if you wait to change the oil at LR's recommendation, it will be too late and the box is done for..... thought that they'd have learnt with the TD6 Censored up.... Obviously they don't learn from their mistakes and we are left to bear the fruits of their incompetency Thud Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

That is the fluid on the Advanced Factors site for LR 8 Speed Gearboxes - there is only one of those the ZF8.
It doesn't have "Lifeguard 8" written on it anywhere but the Fleabay advert uses the name. However, does have the LR 023288 compliance.
