Actually its better if you use a sharp knife - less chance of scratching:
Although the pic shows the knife in the middle you do the corners Very Happy

Where is the best place to go for blanks for the big keys? Is this a main dealer visit or is there somewhere online? I have 2 that I need to refurb as the rubber coating is start to peel.
thanks, James

so i took a leap of faith and had a go at changing the key fob and to my surprise it works!!

before,

after,

the new fob cost £10 off ebay and unfortunately doesnt have the 'range rover' logo on it ..maybe the next one i purchase will have..

its fiddly to do but quite easy..i had to do a little fettling to get the pcb board to fit by just taking about 1mm off one 5mm long edge ..
the emergency key blade fits under the silver side bit.. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan - this is really interesting.

Do you have any sense of how much smaller and lighter the new key fob is than the original? Maybe a picture of old and new side by side would help, as well as approximate weights courtesy of kitchen scales?

Thanks

Stan - I've got an empty one on my desk with the Range Rover in the metal section - if you want it, PM me your address & I'll stick it in the post

I kept it from when I accidentally took mine swimming - the inner was knackered, but I keep the case just in case.....

thanks to a very nice gentleman by the name of alistair i now have a more authentic looking key fob with the range rover logo on the silver bit..

although the chinese jobbys are ok i think a genuine LR fob would be more preferable due to the better quality materials used..

Inspired by the success of Stan and others, I've also replaced my bulky 2010 key with the slimmer, lighter model. Only the cheapo eBay shell at £10, but looked carefully for one with the Range Rover lettering.

Entire job, from start to finish, no more than 15 minutes. Easy to remove the bottom from the old key following instructions here. A bit of sandpaper to remove a mm or two from one edge of the circuit board and it fits a treat. No tracks nearby so easy and safe to do.

Whilst the height and width are a bit smaller than the original key, the real advantage is that its about half the thickness and a little over half the weight. All in all a very worthwhile, easy and cheap job. Definitely going to do the same with the spare key so that I have a matching set.
