Torque converter

Hi all
I need to get my torque converter rebuilt.
Does anyone have any good or bad things to say about jpat and mackies in scotland?

I understand that our resident expert member ( and auto box designer by trade) "RRPhil" uses JPAT for his TC Rebuilds, so it would be fair to say they must be highly regarded.

Haven't seen anything good or bad about Mackies, but others will be along to comment I'm sure. GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus

I have used Jpat and they are very good. Remove converter, drain oil and place in a sturdy box.
Call them and they will send a courier to collect it. Once it is ready they will call you for payment details, this includes collection, repair and delivery costs.
Usually a two/three day turnaround.

A bit nearer to you is Sussex Auto Parts based in East Sussex ( http://www.sussexautos.co.uk/torque-converters.php ). Like JPat they are an official ZF Parts centre and transmission and torque converter rebuilder. JPat and SAP are the only two I would use that I know have the correct equipment to completely take apart a ZF TC and rebuild and balance it.
I got my torque converter rebuilt at SAP (well actually exchanged on the spot) and their customer service was superb. They went the extra mile to send me on my way with an exchange unit without having to wait for a rebuild which they said they could do while I waited if I wanted. They also charged me less than quoted, only £150.
They regularly rebuild huge batches of TC's for a customer in Germany and while I was there they were running a training day on rebuilding transmissions which was interesting having a nosy at Wink
They do have a stock of some rebuilt TC's on the shelf but if not can rebuild your own with a turn around of a few days.

When asking whoever you decide to use, the torque converter on the 4.4V8 Range Rover with ZF 5HP24 transmission has the code F38. There are different spec TC's used on the 5HP24 for different cars so the code is important to get right. You will probably be asked for the code when enquiring.

As has been said by RRPhil any decent mechanic can replace the Torque Converter just make sure they use the correct transmission fluid which for the ZF 5HP24 is LT71141.
