Highest mileage BMW V8s?

Hi guys mentioned before I did that thing you should never do - I went on the car sites to see how high on the miles these things can take ... According to them the highest one for sale (and has been for sale on eBay) in the last 6 months is 154k that doesn't seem much mines at 144k and I though for a big lump that was nothing, he'll I have a 330 with 200k plus still pulling like a train - so I was wondering what high miles people have and ideally if they have or haven't had some kind of major engine work (I. E guides or vanos) and if they are on gas?

I had a '52' L322 V8 with 210,000 or so miles I looked after/sold in 2012. I've just checked the MOT history online and it's still going with 235,000 on it.

It's a HSE in Adriatic blue with Navy leather!

as Ive commented on this before, i'll summarise, my 02 v8 now has 166k, it was pro LPG fitted, at 60k, and I bought the car, at 144k, with broken chain guides. I repaired it and re-sealed the vanos gears. So, ive now done 20k ish, and all good, but with a weeping coolant loss, I recently did my valley pan gasket, and fitted the lower temp thermostat.

I've heard of 300k plus, on the bmw version on this m62tu44 engine, have a look at their forums too.
im always amazed at how clean the inside of these engines are. -compared to the old days of horrid black carbon goo, everywhere. maybe a product of modern oils, but I think with some simple maintenance, we have to expect these engines to go on and on. when we look at mileages when choosing a car, we should not worry about it so much, so long as there is good evidence of people keeping it in good order.
its not even like my 166k engine uses any amount of oil. (all cars 'use' oil) and its quiet, like a little sewing machine, and its still got 'power'.
I trust this engine, and even the car! Shocked
now im running 'cooler' than when it was built, (my theory to its 'brittle-ness', and leaks...)

ive even got a new battery, and its a win-win! Thumbs Up

This high mileage thread; a similar thread started over on the D3/D4 forum....people were mainly around 150-200k but then an ex highways or ex police D3 that was now a long distance driver was still going with over 750k on the clock...and rising !!

Been said before but the bigger engines do enjoy a longer life and a good beating at times Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Hi John,

could you please be more specific on how to order and fit the lower temp thermostat please? I would like to go this way too.

I replaced all the water hoses and water temp thermostat recently and indeed one can tell the engine runs very hot from plastics and rubber hoses being 'tired' even at a relatively low mileage : circa 80k miles

If you dig into it i think you might find only the shell and chassis and some other bits are original, i know the engine and gearbox certainly arent Wink FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

That's "Character"'s car which he uses to tow a car trailer delivering motors all over the country. It had a new engine at about 500k but it really is Trigger's Broom. Plus it's a diesel which tend to be longer lived than petrols. Certainly not one to use as an example of the life of components, there's nothing original on it. Laughing

Don't forget I think he's so sick of it he's finally moved over to a beaver tail merc sprinter conversion thing or similar now Smile

To be honest I don't think any other disco will see that miles on its clock and I doubt most will get past 200k on the original engine, 5thoae 2.7'a seem to have a few issues long term... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Cheerio

As Pete fitted his identical thermostat kit, over a year before I did mine, and he knows his way around a toolbox, I would trust his forthcoming write up.
It's basically a £50 (via a German supplier,) kit, with longer bolts, and some spacers. You have to saw off the old thermostat holding 'wings' and file them flat, and assemble it, and bolt it back on. (Same housing) and although it doesn't feel 'cool', it is running cooler.
About an hours work.
