Read my build thread, link in my signature, Will give you an idea what goes on an old BMW FF there is a list in there somewhere of what I changed in the first year... I use it hard off road and do tend to over service it a bit but as has been said they aren't too bad if you don't pay for labour....

Just don't be tempted to buy cheap Britpart bits, they wear out before you get to the end of the drive....

Get one that's already LPG converted and they are cheaper than a diesel to run, a dam sight faster and sound better... Thumbs Up Pete

My last car was a 2004 4.4, disposed of at about 100,000 miles because the engine was going. They are great when all is well, but there were certainly times with mine when it was a real money pit, despite all scheduled servicing etc. Every car is different, but I don't think you would get Honda Civic type reliability and costs. My experience suggests normal maintenance at maybe £650 a year (not DIY) but at that age of car there can be component failures fairly regularly. When i sold mine it was about half the price of an older Defender, that is partly a matter of fashion, but also reflects the greater complexity of the RR and likely repair requirements at that age. It's not like me buying a RR Classic 3.5 2-door with 97,000 miles in 1988, they were quite simple with much less electronics etc. So in a bad year you might have to spend £3000, and there have been posts on here by people whose engines have gone and the car is just good for parts, as it is hard to get a decent engine and the cost of a new one is not worth it.

Looking back at my one, the interior was fine and there was not much corrosion, though there were stone chips on the front of the bonnet and on the panels behind the rear doors. Later cars can have rusty tailgates and tailgate straps and rear wheel arch corrosion. Brake discs need regular replacement, especially at the back and at that age brake line corrosion and brake seizures can be a problem. Electrical gremlins and associated battery costs are common, though my 2004 car didn't suffer from that. I did need a new radiator, new suspension strut, power steering motor, various sensors, wiper controls, air con final stage resistor and perhaps other things i have forgotten.

Have a look at the buying guide on here and maybe price up some of the more regularly required parts and compare with what you are used to. Good luck. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Sadly I don't have more to put into , plus I don't like the newer model Wink l322 is perfect

I think , as people say it can cost large amounts but do any have to and doesn't mean it will .

The resin for this post was more to find out what sort of common problem they have , blowing fuel pump or a show all the time . Rings on the compressor every 100hrs
Coolant pump not lasting very long. That sort of stuff .

I o my do 7k a year mileage .and plan to get another bike soon so can take a chunk of that mileage off again .


I have built a few street fight show bikes and raced supermoto I think I done about 9k in a year on parts for them lol . Never want to do that again

Petrol cost doesn't put me off at all I know what I am in for there

Please, don't be put off by my post. I was fully warned, and fully aware of what an absolute tw*t of a car the maseratti would be, but I had always wanted one so I went for it regardless. It spent more time on a ramp than it did on the road, but I wouldn't swap the memories of when it was all actually working for anything.

Dreams always come at a price, all you need to do is work out if the price is affordable for you at this present time, or if you would be better to wait a while until it is.

For what it's worth, I say go for it, life's too short for what ifs, and if it does get too much then sell it on and go to the next car on your list! 2009 Westminster. Mariana black with ivory leather.

Spend time looking for the best one is my advice. The usual advice will serve you well, full service history, looked after exterior interior shows it was cared for. I've had my 2008 4.2sc for over 2 years and have only replaced battery and coolant bottle. I have it serviced at a well known and respected Indy near me as soon as it tells me to, i converted it to LPG and so at the mo costs roughly the same as a much more run of the mill family car. Just done 1600 miles to Italy in it and got roughly the same back and it hasn't missed a beat. Best GT car I've owned. I also own a 17 year old SL500 a and the warnings bout buying one were similar to the RR. Like most things in life you can be lucky or unlucky, at the end of the day it's gGot to be better taking the chance than regretting the missed opportunity.
I go down my drive and look for any excuse to fire up my cars, friends and neighbours with sensible cars don't and worse don't get it.
Your mechanically minded so have a better idea what to look for than most, my advice, go out and get the best all rounder you'll ever own. Current:

The Super charged 4.2 was the fore-runner to the 5.0 SC and has another hundred horse power over the standard 4.4. And like buying an SC nowadays they only come in top spec, so you generally get all the extras that are options on the 4.4. Thumbs Up

I am still going to go and get a RR 03-05 . Just love them there's nothing on the market that I ever care to look at .

As it was said get one and try it , if it works out to much I can sell it on again.

They can be expensive. Mine has been the cheapest LR I have ever had. It has had a few issues of late and every time it goes to LR it goes back two times after that as more things fail. Last service was £1200 with extra bits on it. Done 92k and original gearbox so may need refurbishing in the future.

Costs are higher than a euro box, but reasonable for what the car is bearing in mind the cost when they were new.

Get one and enjoy it. Alex
