United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

I have just bought this kit in 80 deg version and also a bolt in standard stat that opens at 88 deg I think it is which is probably the 740D stat you mention so not sure which to go for after my timing chain rebuild.
I found a pattern part stat for £25 which I might buy to mod rather than my standard one

VC Fan and Aux fan working all good, will give it a shot.

Two reasons, it's quite a bit cheaper over here than the BMW one and secondly it's quite a bit cheaper over here than the BMW one....

I personally wouldn't use a pattern thermostat either...

Actually the 740D t-stat is even more here because it needs to be ordered from over there. They never imported the 740d to the US. When I was researching it I was hoping to find it or an equivalent cheaper. Looks like its the mod for me too.

This is the vemo one i bought which is actually made by behr so i believe is the same as OEM?
I'll see how the rebuild goes, the thermostat might be the least of my worries.
Can the thermostat be changed in the one below or are they a complete unit

That's an 88 deg one so should be fine, you can't change the stat itself in any of the BMW original stats, that's one appeal of the kit, it's a lot cheaper and then cheaper still if you need to change the stat...

Well I got a spare thermostat from a buddies garage, ripped out the guts, but then I remembered I had an old ELM327 scanner lying around somewhere, so plugged that in to see the coolant temp.

Even after 1/2 an hour of standing idling with the A/C on in 35C ambient temp, the coolant temp never rose above 90C, mostly it was standing at mid to high 80s

Maybe Middle East market cars have a different rated thermo ? or maybe one of the previous owners already ripped the guts out ?

You're right, I went for a short drive at night, still 34C outside, didnt have the gizmo with me, but scrolled through the secret menu thing where you add the numbers and press left and right knobs etc etc, The car was showing coolant temp as 105C

Ok since I had a spare thermostat, I said screw it, had already stripped out the guts, Some one earlier had put the fan on so tight no amount of whacking was opening it, never used the special too on, P38s or L322, A few blows and the fan comes out.

Anyways was bit of a B!tch to do with the fan and shroud installed, specially the last 10mm nut on the bottomw towards the engine even after stripping out all the hoses and pipes and connection. So yes it can be done if you dont have the massive 30 something spanner but if you do, it makes life much easier.

Long story short, the temp never went beyond 103C even sitting at lights as soo as you start moving it drops to anywhere between 97-101. Reaches closed loop on fuel trims so thats also not a worry and even in summer it hardly reaches below 15C on very cold nights around 3 or 4 am it might go to single digits sometimes, so no worries about putting in a thermo during winter.

Job seems to be a good 'un. So thats one less thing to worry bout on the rover now!

I've just done this mod go as part of my rebuild. I read somewhere yesterday that you have to Dremel out a notch in the housing for the bleed nipple, I didn't so hope I haven't messed up. Sure I would have noticed though as I was assembling it all.

Only thing I'm unsure of is that plug issue with the coolant leaking. How exactly does the coolant leak into the plug? My plug is connected again as it felt wrong to leave it unplugged. Should it be left unplugged with this new stat mod? 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

I've left mine unplugged because when I took the original thermostat apart and took the heating element out I could see the copper of the wires in the remaining housing. My thinking was that when the ECU noticed me putting my foot down it would send signals to the heating element to heat up and as there was no heating element just coolant it might short something.

I'm probably mistaken but its unplugged. It's tucked up underneath the plastic engine cover where it's nice and warm and dry.
