+44C/111F today and, during an extended run on the motorway, the coolant temp (as per the ScanGauge II) didn't rise above 105 deg C.

It's interesting that the car's temp gauge sits right in the middle from about 80C to 105C Ron B. VK2OTC

I believe the gauge is designed to stay in the middle for a given range, balanced or damped or something i cant remember what he term is but it is so that you know if it starts to move off to the right you are in the poop Neutral

Gentlemen,

The BEHR thermostat for 740 D is exactly the same part as in previous post (VEMO branded box)

Bought it for € 72 at the link above / thats 62 pounds in island money Very Happy

And it's including 20% VAT - which makes it 50 pounds when you can supply them with a valid VAT number.

Some patience is needed to give performance feedback - we are making progress on the rebuild....

I am interested too to see what the running temp is with an 88 stat as mine runs at around 93 degrees with the 80.
The bleed procedure is the key as i found out

I tried an 80, 87 and 90something...

Made very little difference to the running temp, just opened earlier or later... Thumbs Up Pete

That's makes sense, I think the natural running temp is around 90-95 degreees

You know how that goes. One thing leads to another and you starts saying " while I'm this far I might as well..."

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but isn't there a direct replacement lower temp thermostat available from BMW? One where there is no need to modify the housing? Accepting it may well be more expensive. Drives:

Ah yes, so it is Andy, thanks. So, the BMW OEM NUMBER 11512248542 is an 88 deg unit that is a direct replacement part for the standard unit (LR part No. PEL000060, which is a 105 deg unit)? I note you refer to a blanking disk for the heater, is this required for the L322 application?

If possible I'd like to reduce the running temp of my car, but using direct fit replacement parts. Drives:

this is what you need

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic13318.html

The 88 degree blanking plate is part of the vemo stat and is where the heater would be, the plug that normally goes to it would just need weather proofing and tucking away and shouldn't have any effect or dash warnings, it would only show up in diagnostics as a fault.
i have not tried the vemo / stock one as i have the 80 degree mod but i think you would be fine with the 88 and your temp should be around 95 degrees instead of 105 + as per Haylands post it will just open at 88 instead of 80 or 105 for the standard
