Thinking about returning to the fold. Sold our 4.2SC last year and dabbled with an XC90 which was fine. Eldest about to drive so no longer have the need for 7 seats (if we ever did).

Have read the articles on here about both, I like the idea of the better economy updated gearbox etc of the 4.4, but would probably miss the punch of the SC,(anyone remapped their 4.4) plus they seem to have all bar the 'kitchen sink'.

Looking at the last of the '59's, 2010 and 2011. Don't want to pay more than £24K.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated?

5.0 Supercharged Autobiography its the best L322 by a margin and I drive them all.

4.4TDV8 is nice but has many potential issues and is nowhere near as nice to drive.

Wasn't aware there were issues with the 4.4, I knew there were with the 3.6.

I'd agree. Just sold my L322 5.0 S/C to buy a L405. The 4.4 diesel is a good engine,especially with LR warranty but it's not as light feeling or revvy as the 'Charger. I would have had another S/C but finding a sensibly priced L405 in that guise is a mission.

Slightly off topic I know; I considered a 5.0 recently, maybe a bit of a pipe dream but I still couldn't get my head around the fact that once I hitch the tintent on I could well be seeing single figure MPG.

By all accounts a well maintained, serviced and looked after 3.6 or 4.4 diesel would be more than adequate. I'd love a SC but the running costs on fuel are simply not realistic to me. Unless someone can convince me otherwise? Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I haven't done real world calcs on the SC but mine seems to get around 11 or 12 with the caravan on. Considering I am only getting 16 anyway it doesn't make much difference

I'm sure if I drove at lesser speeds it would be better but there is something about the look on other drivers faces when a caravan comes passed them off the slip road!

Twin axle Coachman (notoriously heavy) behind my S/C used to average 16 or 17. Behind my 3.6 TDV8 when I had it I was getting 19 or 20.

I get 20+ from a 5.0 on a normal cycle driving normally.

I have seen 25+ believe it or not.... (But whats the point)

I'd never try to argue with Gary - so I won't and I do have a fairly high mileage 4.4 TDV8 so I am biased but the one thing i would never say it needed was more grunt - in fact a friend of mine who runs a race team offered to chip it for me and I said no!

If I had done anything (which I didn't) I would only have had the economy version of the remap because the last thing I needed was more power!

The petrol engine may be quieter, and not suffer the slight jerk that can be found if you lift off the gas and then reapply it whilst the car is moving slowly (say like at a roundabout) but even that was massively improved by a software update in mine.

Lets be clear if money were no issue I'd have a LWB L405 in Supercharged petrol form, but in the real world where I live 30+MPG, and 35+ on a run and 1500rpm at "ahem" MPH mean the 4.4 TDV8 is a really great piece of kit to live with.

I don't tow a caravan so can't help with that MPG buy I sometimes tow a trailer with a race car on it and the economy goes to 27/30 MPG but the TDV8 just doesn't notice the extra weight up hill or down dale.

Buy what you want but drive the diesel and you'll be amazed - the 8 speed box is fantastic too - possibly even more impressive than the change from 3.6 to 4.4 - it's that good 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

(People underestimate the importance of the pleasure that a car imbibes in you, For me the smoothness, cabin tranquility and instant response of the Petrol simply makes me want to drive on & on & on....)

PS: Every Diesel I have driven a distance leaves my foot tingling and that's loads of Range/Land Rovers...

I guess you are referring to Landy on the Avatar Gary - as I don't have one - and this is all in the spirit of fun - you have driven far more Range Rovers than I ever will so I respect you opinion and would probably agree if ever drove a Supercharged but why do you have a dead foot in a diesel....... don't you use the adaptive cruise  2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ
