TDV6 - SDV8

This was posted on PHs , True or False? I thought the SDV8 was the most popular model.

The V6 is far more popular than the V8 (although the latter is superb). The V8's stick on the forecourt and they are an embargo car for straight buy backs (which says it all). The V6's hold value better as well and a standard/nicely specked car doesn't sit around for long. Some customers will default to a V8 in a RR, but more buy the V6.

Engine is one part of the spec. Desirable cars are just that, regardless of engine. Some like the V6 and some prefer the V8. I have the V8 and very much by design. I drove both before settling on the V8.

But, more important is the options. I wanted certain things as we all do. I would have taken the right V6 over the wrong V8 but fortunately I didn't need to.

Hi w8 don't worry you will find the answer here albeit a little slow at times. Have you tried the SDV8 yet?

OK, are you buying the car to use, or to re-sell in 3 months? If you're so concerned about resale value buy a Fiat 500

Go drive them both and decide which on YOU want. I wanted the grunt for towing which was a major part in the decision to go V8 but the 3.0 is no slouch.

Then decide which options you 1. Need 2. Want and 3. Would be cool. In that order. It will get you to a trim level and options list that you can search for on the LR website.

Mine was
1. rear entertainment. Keeps the kids quiet on long journeys.
Privacy glass. My son has an eye condition which makes him sensitive to bright light.
V8 diesel for towing (or S/C petrol if I could find one - which I couldn't)
2. Understated colours.
20" wheels for ride comfort
Side steps for the wife.
3. 1800w Meridian sound system. (I got this)

So I put them all in the search and came up with 4 possibles. Bought one of those cars.

IMHO

Having driven both I found that the TDV6 was more than adequate in general use.

It does lack some of the low down shove at lower speeds but you can drive around that and you can tune it up if you so wanted.

I do wonder though with the car all up with people and a full boot how much it them struggle - whereas the SDV8 already has enough reserve.

The obvious benefit of the TDV6 is that it will give better economy and many claim it handles and drives better due to being less nose heavy.

I wanted the SDV8 this time, but having now driven a TDV6 for a few days I would gladly have one.

My only concern is the 'current' TDV6 issues around total failure. This seems to be a bit of a theme with the engine in its various gens.

The days of SDV8 must surely be numbered, in surprised it's has been kept in development this long.
