4.4 55 plate petrols

After having the 4.2 SC , 3.0 and 3.6 diesels , how reliable are the old 4.4 55 plate petrols as i might have the chance of one to run about in but was just wondering how good or bad these variants are ... ====================================

Assuming you mean the 4.4AJV8 with the ZF 6HP26 then i hear very good indeed and quite rare now.

I understand the earlier BMW 4.4 lump is better suited to lpg though if this your intention. 2006 4.2 SC

The Jag 4.4 is more available than the 4.2SC in Australia. And yes I can't recall reading about a problem with them. It seems to be be generally agreed the pre 2008/9 ZF 6hp26 should be serviced at least every 100,000km. ______________________________

Mick, assuming you're on about the AJV8 Jag engine try driving one if you can. I had this engine (twice) in Discovery 3's. It's super smooth, sounds nice and it's a real lazy drive.

BUT, and if you've not driven one you'd not guess, it lacks low down torque. You need to rev it to make it go. It's nothing like the 'Charger and not even close to the diesel for bottom end grunt. I loved them both but they do need to be up over 2000 rpm to come on power.

BHP is high for sure, but that comes further up the rev range, and in a 2.5 tonne vehicle it's more torque you need to make it accelerate well. That said, get the revs up and it's off like a Bride's nightie. Overtaking on motorways is a down change usually, 6th gives decent fuel economy but not acceleration.

Agree with this Thumbs Up

The BMW engine feels more potent, but the AJV8 is just as quick, and more refined which makes it feel slower Thumbs Up

I have one. Love the engine. And surprisingly good economy on a motorway run.
