2011 4.4 TDV8 Alternator Replacement

Hi all,

Looking for some advice from those with experience of replacing the alternator on the 4.4 TDV8

Our 2011 Autobiography recently threw up a “charging System Fault” message and I’ve confirmed a P065A-00 Generator System Performance Fault code is present so I’m preparing the replace the Alternator.

I replaced one on our previous 3.6 using the excellent guide in the Wiki, so I know that the Cooling Fan needs to be removed, however, this seems to be a more involved task on the 4.4.

It looks like the Air conditioning pipes need to be disconnected thus losing the refrigerant – is this so?
I take it that the cooling System Coolant will need to be drained?
Also, does the Turbocharger by pass valve and Transmission Fluid Cooler need to be removed?

Any help, advice or sage words gratefully received.

At least that’s the wife’s Christmas present sorted Very Happy

Cheers

Dave

Not sure how the access is from the bottom. Looking at the top of the engine to check my pulleys the other day taking the fan off is a PItA, according to rave the whole surround has to come off. However if the alternator will go out downwards then the belt tensioner can be accessed just by removing the top turbo hose, which gives good enough access to release the belt. I would suspect most of the fan removal malarchy is to do with getting the belt off, which isn't 100% necessary.

So if you can get under it and remove the arch liners and under tray and find access to the alternator is ok then you shouldn't have to take the fans and AC off.

I think here are some coolant hoses which need to be removed though. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks Guys,

I had seen the Wiki thread and that implies that the Accessory Drive Belt needs to be removed – think the 4.4 has 2 belts? I remember that this was the case with her 3.6 and that in order to remove the belt I had to remove the Cooling Fan.

Think I’ll follow NorthernMonkeyJones’ Advice and try to access it from the bottom because as he says, removing the fan looks a real PItA

If no one has done it before will let you know how I get on

Thanks once again

Dave

Good evening all,

Just to update - I managed to replace the Alternator over the weekend.

First Off – big respect to those who have managed to replace it with removing the Cooling Fan – beyond my skills set I’m afraid.

For those interested here's how I did it:

• Disconnect Battery Negative Terminal
• Raise and support front end
• Remove Towing Eye Cover and Radiator Splash Shield
• Drain Coolant.
• Remove the one bolt holding on the Transmission Fluid Cooler and remove it from its bracket (no need to disconnect the hoses as it can now be moved to allow access)
• Remove the Turbocharger Bypass Valve
• Remove L/H and R/H Air Cleaner Outlet Pipes
• Remove Throttle Actuator Air Supply Pipe
• Now the Cooling Fan can be removed – the problem is that the Cooling Fan shroud has to be removed at the same time as, unlike the 3.6, it is a single piece unit.
• The Cooling Fan Should is secured with a mixture of 8 and 10 mm screws – about 12 in total!
• The Cooling Fan nut is a 36mm Left Hand Thread
• I did not disconnect the Air Conditioning pipe work as it can be moved out of the way to allow the Cooling Fan and Cooling Fan Shroud to be withdrawn upwards
• Once the Cooling Fan had been removed access from the top is very good – much better than on the 3.6 and I simply followed the procedure as detailed in the Wiki.
• I did not removed the Primary drive belt but simply relieved the tension and slipped it off the Alternator Pulley
• Installation, as they say, is the reverse of the removal.

Not sure what the Main dealer rate for this job is, but I managed to get a genuine Land Rover (Denso) Alternator for £200. The only other cost was for some replacement coolant and several skinned knuckles!

In summary – a doable DIY which represents a substantial cost saving - but allow a weekend for it

Happy Christmas one and all

Dave

Well done that man!!

So it won't come out down ways! Good to know that this can be done without disconnecting the AC! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi, good read. I did the alt in my old 2008 range rover on a drive in the snow and was a total PITA.
Now have a 2011 rangie and need to change the belts and tensioner. Do you have any advice for taking the fan and cover out? Did you undo the fan blade and then take the cover out at the same time. Just wonder as you say its a one piece not and not in two half's.

Cheers

Welcome and search really is your friend here.

'tis in the Wiki

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic48934.html

Read right to the end as JonhW has some good info on page 2

I beleive some do/some don't take out the fan and shroud, the other threads about this in the forum should inform to help. I'm (not) looking forward to doing this when mine needs it. Cheers

Thanks for getting back to me. Had a look over the post and looks like the tensioner alone is an easy job, unfortunately my belt is running about half off the tensioner and I think it has been rubbing against the fan pulley. Be fair the car just hit 100k miles so would need done anyway. Just cant see how the cover would come out without major work??? I will try do a search on here to see what info there is or try the method at the end of the post.

Not had much luck lately with the old girl. The wife smashed the front bumper. And the insurance repair garage had it in and out 4 times for things I wasn't happy with. I now get constant ribbing at work for owing a rangie and how much issues thay have, but this is my 3rd one and I love them! Name another car that can turn up in style at a 5 star event, then go off-roading and shooting at the weekend, drive through all the floods that stopped my colleagues getting into the office and also fold the seats down to become a van bigger that most of these modern crap mini-van things.

Anyway rant over Thumbs Up Laughing

Love the rant, well after the ribbing Smile

Some of the alternator replacement threads may also help as one or two descibe the fan removal and it is covered in the WM in the Wiki, but does need referencing between several sections.

This may help:

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post533524.html#533524

and yes, it is a bit of a job, but you don't have to degas the AC as the pipe can be moved sufficiently to allow the fan and shroud to come out. Cheers
