LED main beam headlight bulbs

I was wondering whether anyone has any experience with replacing ordinary filament headlight bulbs with an LED equivalent, either in FFRR or anything else I suppose.

Given that LEDs are more efficient than filament bulbs, generating much less heat, I was thinking that an LED equivalent with 55w input would generate a lot of light. As far as I recall, the limiting factor to comply with regulations is the electrical input power, not the amount of light produced. Sure enough, eBay is full of lots of options for not much money, one example below

I'm not talking about the D3S HID dipped beam bulbs, which I've recently replaced with cheap Chinese imports which I'm very happy with. This is for the H7 main beam bulb.

Now, I imagine the beam pattern might be very different than an ordinary filament bulb and this may make it a complete non starter. Or, perhaps, the bulb monitoring would throw a fit. Has anyone tried it? Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

I've upgraded the high beam bulbs with the 2x55w (110W) ZY P6 10400lm H7 Canbus ones (see http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic39089.html). I'm very happy with these - gives a lot more light than the original halogen high beam bulbs. You should try to get a set where the LEDs are places exactly at the same distance from the base as the filament in the halogen lamp, then you get the most correct light characteristic.

Thanks, both, for you experiences. That's helpful to know. The bulbs that seem to work well are about 3x the price of the cheaper ones, so will be interested to hear how you get on Scott. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hmmm..... thanks Stan, some interesting and enthusiastic comments there. Starting to make me think that this is worth pursuing. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

it all depends how much illumination you need...i've tweaked mine up a bit and although they are still 4300k [to be changed soon to 6000k] they do light up the road pretty well... ... - .- -.
