England 2010 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Well it looks like I will be doing mine now as it has just packed up. It was reading good and showing that i had just under 100 miles left, I thought that I would fill up tomorrow but when I started it up to nip around to my sons house it read empty. I was hoping that buying a newer model with warranty that I would be spared the constant niggling failures that i have become accustomed to but alas, it is not to be. The Best 4x4 by far, so long as you have deep pockets.

sorry to restart this one.

my 2009 3.6 tdv8 has developed a fuel gauge fault.
it seams to sit just under half tank all the time. thought it fixed it self this morning when it was at quarter.. but after driving to the shop and coming back out its back to half .
worryingly the range changes as well, so im not sure how much I have in the tank.

a couple of weeks ago my friend managed to completely flatten the battery when he was picking me up at the airport, 3hrs later and a booster jump start from the RAC the car started.. but im sure the gauge started playing up at the same time.

are the 2 related and I need to reset the ecu somehow or just so happens that the plugs have given up at the same point ?

also ( sorry long one ) is the technical bulletin repair the same for my 2009 .. photos of dashboards look like the lcd facelifted model.

Hi folks (i know this is an old thread) my L322 2012 RR Autobiography (with digital dash) reads full fuel (or near full) Fuel level ALL the TIME even after a few hundred miles from full fill up, the lowest it reads is like 1/2-3/4's full... how do i fix ?, im sure its a "stuck sensor" as i haven't used it for like 6 months and left it with a full tank of diesel... please help !!

You could take the inspection plates off and exercise the floats / sensors to see if it makes any difference. You could also measure the resistance across the two sensors and see if one is wildly out. There are threads on here that walk through how to do it. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Soooo, i had a go, for others this may be helpful... you lift up the rear seats, remove the spare wheel cover, remove the rear seat locking brackets (large torx socket screw) remove the trim panels each side (partially, dont need to remove them at the top) then peel the carpet back (tie it to the folded up seats out of the way..)

re install the spare wheel cover so you can lie on it... then remove the 8 (4 each side) 10 mil nuts ont he access panels..

you will see as per the pictures... at this point i had NO idea what to do.. i couldn't figure out how the tank access points were removed.. so i just twiddled wires a bit and removed the big black connector and WD40'd it... then BINGO it seems to have started working again... so i put it all back together and am now covering a few miles and the gauge "appears" to be working correctly until i can fill it up and completely start to measure the mileage again i wont know if its working, ill update here when i have more results...

I got caught with this last week in my 08 4.2sc Big Cry. Unfortunately it was on a road just after a dual carriageway on Friday rush hour. Unfortunately the tailback I created managed to get me on the radio Embarassed rac guy has no clue what had happened as my fuel gauge was showing 1/4 tank and I was on lpg when it died. No error codes on his machine. My specialist suggested 10l of unleaded which did the trick. He suggests that the lack of fuel may have caused a lack of pressure hence why it died despite running on lpg at the time. Booked in with him for later this month when he’s free. Mr. Green Current:

My car has started reading half what it should do. First indication was today when the low fuel light came on, but reported range of 25 miles (half what it normally does when that happens).

I guess I have another job to do over Christmas Rolling Eyes

Has it generally always been the wiring at fault, and not either of the senders ? Too many toys, not enough time

Hi John,

Mine certainly has been wiring only so far. (Note - Mine is the 3.6 TDV8 but I suspect the process is the same)

See page 2 of this thread - 4th post down. Follow my directions to lift up seats, remove seat locking bars (hex key) and possibly side trim and spare wheel cover - makes it easier to pull up carpet.

Once you lift the carpet it's easy to see the access covers -

Using large flat blade screwdriver and 'hitting device' spin the black circular retaining collars that hold the orange plastic covers off and remove the multi plug, tubes.

Picture one of the last page shows the white plug (which would be inside the tank) - Remove that, give it a clean (I use contact cleaner and blow with air line) and replace.

Picture 2 shows the black connector on the top of the plastic cover - do the same with this.

Put it all back together remembering to put the tubes/wiring through the black circular retaining collar before reconnecting them (I always do and have to remove them again when I realise)

Turn it on and check your gauge..

(for the record - I have done this 'fix' at least 5 times now over the last few years - Eventually I slit the carpet under the seat retaining bars so don't need to remove them each time and takes about 20 to fix - its a pain but can't summon up the strength to pay someone to permanently fix it)

Alternative failure mode

Hello,

thanks for all these descriptions how to access the tank.

Mine is a MY 11 4.4TDV8 which gauge did not show full. This thread made me think to fix it quickly.
Thanks to that, I did not drive it to complete empty. I drove her to be sure that the level is below half capacity.
According the descriptions above, I made access to the connectors. Surprise, surprise they are in good shape, nothing to complain.
But I fund my pump assembly lying loose inside the tank. Since the sender unit is part of the pump assembly it was out of angle. Due to the stiffness of connecting pipes the assembly stayed in a self chosen position.
After taking all components out, it became clear what had happened.

The pump is clamped into the tank, this is achieved by a spring forced plastic part at the top of the pump (black arrow).
On mine the connection between the top plastic part and the tube shaped guides (red lines with springs) was cracked on both sides.
It could been fixed with hot glue and the Lady runs since withe a working gauge.

Had this on mine and it was the connector just as others have said. It’s just a pain to do and you need a low fuel level to do the passenger side. I used a transfer pump and was lucky to have a fairly low level so only needed to pump 20L out. Very poor design but easily sorted.
