Gearbox

Looking for advice on gearbox replacement. It's looking like my mechatronic is broken. I'm considering a reconditioned gearbox over a new mechatronic.

Has anyone around the northwest area ..gtr Manchester, Liverpool, Preston to Crewe area had a reconditioned box supplied and fit ,if so who did it and a rough idea on cost.

Thanks, craig

Craig,

I’m curious why you want to go to the expense of changing the complete transmission when it would be so easy just to remove the Mechatronic unit and have it tested. Apart from the Mechatronic unit the 6HP26 is a pretty bullet proof transmission. I’m sure that Pete Stirrup at Valvebodies UK in Wallasey would be able to identify the problem on one of their Hydra-Test machines & fix it for you.

Phil

Phil,

My logic behind a refurb gearbox Is based on the replacement of the mechatronic priced at £1000 plus labour plus oils/filters.
A local auto gearbox only specialist has given me this price , explaining the mechatronic is a order only , from Germany.
My knoledge of the workings of a gearbox is very very limited and im worried to spend x amount on a new mechatronic to find its another component within the box that's faulty. So my logic is ..replace the whole thing.
I will give the garage a call on Monday and try them, I personally don't fancy dismantling the box from under the car whilst it's on its wheels and im also not able to remove the gearbox from the car myself .

I really really appreciate your help and all the other members that have given me pointers thus far.

I'm at the point where I need to decide to invest in the rangie and fix it properly (which I really do want to keep) or trade it in against a car (which would really upset me) .

Will make contact on Monday. As I really want to keep our Rangie, the rest of the car is in tip top condition.
