'Tis a sad day

Looks like the engine in my work hack (Skoda Superb) has finally let go Sad

Only managed 214k miles. I think it still owes me money.

Yes, this is a work hack, which, to it's credit has kept over 100k miles (160k Km) off the FFRR. It only cost me 2 grand in Jan 2014 so 3 years worth of cheap motoring. In all that time all I've done is servicing, tyres and a cambelt.

Plus, since I work as a contractor I don't like taking posh cars to client site. Creates an impression whereas a plain black Skoda just disappears in the car park. Don't want the person who signs off my invoices pre-judging me.

And of course, the Superb Elegance is the top of the range Skoda, the best they do. Like a long wheelbase Passat but more comfortable, does 50mpg (about 5.4L /100km in metric) and, despite Frank's observation, it actually is a pretty reasonable way to travel.

So, something similar is now being sought out. Thumbs Up

Hell of a car for the money, any idea what causes its demise.

Well, it is still running, sort of. Sounds like a big end has gone when you rev it. Garage taking a look tomorrow but just found a complete engine on the bay for £225 Might just be worth doing. Just passed the MOT, new tyres. Everything else is OK. What else would I buy for the money is what I'm thinking.

£225 for the engine. A couple of hundred more to fit it. Add some engine oil etc. Say £600 all done. Maybe add a DMF and clutch kit whilst it's all out. This clutch is the original according to the service history.

yep, bung the new engine in and see how it goes, so long as its a decent block then you should get another 100k out of it Whistle There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If it sounds like a popping noise and you can feel this popping noise through the air pipe to the air box then the camshafts have worn out.

Common on VAG, did loads at VW when I worked for them. I was at a commercial dealer, not passenger cars but still saw cars that did the same as well.

cheers Alex

I'm the same. I price my jobs in my van as clients see an expensive motor they think they are going to get stung..I've actually had a building company stop using us as the owner was bitching to my painters I was making to much money because of my cars..small minded but true..

I had that as well Stan when we did the extension. I took to parking at teh village hall when we were expecting builders round. Ended up using some Romanian chaps for a lot of it. 10 hours a day instead of 6 and rather more realistic prices.

I even find a difference when driving the FFRR compared to teh Skoda. Nobody lets a RR out of junctions whereas in the Skoda I'm just an ordinary bloke. Sad but true teh way people pre-judge.

I'm the same. If I have anyone coming to the house to quote me on something, I park the car at the end of the close so they don't overprice the job. Steve

Well you were on the money Fella. I did put the car on EBAY but the winner never turned up, so it sat for a couple of weeks and then last friday I got the spanners out and had a look. Camshaft worn on number 2 cylinder, the followers for the PD injectors were all worn, one right through and the rockers were rocking the wrong way due to worn shafts.

So, new cam with bearings, followers, seals, rockers and cambelt fitted. Oil flushed out with engine flush. New oil and filter. Now running like it was when I got it 3 years ago.

Nice to have it back. More free motoring. That lot only cost me 500 quid with top quality synthetic oil too. Now hoping the bottom end holds up a while.
