How low can you go (fuel level)

Took delivery of my car this week and I am a run it on fumes merchant (much to the chagrin of my wife...). Today I had 17 miles of range remaining and when I filled the car only took 73.5 litres against a usable tank capacity of 86 litres.

How low have you gone in your car?

Try not to make it a regular habit.

You really shouldn't let it run on fumes especially with a brand car, can potentially cause long term problems.

Apart from being rather daft, I seem to remember that the ECU chokes off the performance after the warning light comes on (or maybe earlier) as another incentive for you to fill up.

They are very keen you don't run out as (I think I'm right), the fuel system does not self-bleed.

That means you need to get to a LR workshop to restart the car. I can't see why it would be a warranty item.

It is really worth it? Maybe you've got a petrol car?

From memory the usable capacity quoted in the brochure for my car is 105 litres. With the range readout at 5 miles I have yet to get more than 90 litres in the tank. So there seems to be a lot in reserve. All of my L405 have been the similar.

Typically it is 85 litres. That extra 20 litres equates to 70+ miles.

One of the locals, (who I am told is associated with drugs.....) ran out of fuel near my house in his £50k plus Audi Q7, looked a complete knob, expensive car an no fuel in the tank, the look isn't good.

Repeat with new Range Rover................

As another incentive, running the tank empty is more likely to lead to condensation in the fuel tank, leading to issues Regards

Just as an additional comment, my Rover Vitesse V8 TP has a fuel tank capacity of 14.5 gallons, only 10 are useable, due to the internal swirl pot.

I'm sure modern vehicles are better.

Normally the distance to empty goes off when close, to increase anxiety to the driver to refuel....... Razz Regards

It depends on how you view running the tank to empty, I usually fill up as soon when the opportunity presents itself when about 1/4 full. However, I do quite a lot of late night and long distance trips and so might have to look for a filling station. Sometimes that means off route, sometimes within 15 miles of home and my preferred filling station. Overseas on unfamiliar territory the anxiety levels are significantly higher. Not knowing if the 70+ miles is available (thinking about the swirl pot comment) is a nuisance and causes unnecessary worry.

Consistent running to empty has risks, like looking a complete fool at the side of the road, but £24 of fuel that is unusable?

Many thanks for your comments and dire warnings about the uncoolness of running out of fuel!

I was interested in how much people filled up with only because of the enormous quantity of unused fuel when I had just 17 miles remaining.

Next time I shall take it to 0 and see how many unused litres remain.

A new Range Rover stopped at the side of the road, i.m sure the last thing someone would think is its run out of fuel .
More likely a complete melt down. Laughing

With the price of fuel seemingly going up daily it seems to be good practice (at the moment at least) to refill at about half full. Geoff

I have had my old 322 read "--". My son wasn't happy and I may have scarred him for life. He now fills his mini when it is half full.

Laughing Laughing That'll be every 20 minutes then Thumbs Up

My L405 showed a range of 34 miles the other day and I squeezed £99 into it which was about 85 litres. But, interesting to note the brochure shows the 3.0D and Hybrid as having a smaller fuel tank than the 4.4 and 5.0. I never knew that Shocked

Fuel tank capacity – usable (litres) 80 80 105 105 (3.0 Diesel, Hybrid, 4.4 SDV8 and 5.0 S/C in that order)
