United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Epsom Green
new 'alsmost' owner & steep learnign curve

HI All,

very new to all this, And i have a couple of questions already. Laughing

1st one, does the TD6 use any coolant, or should this be a concern. Just been to look round a 2005, main dealer maintained vogue TD6 with 137k on the clock, and i notice the coolant level is about 2cm from the bottom of the expansion tank. All plastic bits inside are nice and clean and the coolant is nice and red but would you expect it to remain full between services?

next one, i tried to pair my iphone 6s with the touch screen nav unit and it said no phone installed. Does it have bluetooth as standard, or is that something i'd need to add. If the latter, how long winded and expensive is that to do?

i realise this is my first post, but it will not be my last. I hope to be an avid and useful member of the family very soon Smile

Any input hugely appreciated

omg my spelling, sorry i should have checked it first.

one more thing, the engine was stone cold and when i opened the coolant reservoir lid there was a notable hiss of pressure, is that normal too on the TD6?

It will say no phone fitted if there isn't one paired.

Try searching on your phone and see if it finds the car - the code will be 2121

ah, thank you. ill try that one tomorrow. i could see 'land rover' as a bluetooth option to pair to, but didn't know the code obviously.

Thanks for that. Now on to the next question, i hope it's not a head gasket issue.

A TD6 should not use any coolant, but its not unheard of. I needn't be a big issue - in fact the most common problem is quite easily fixed.

The coolant expansion tanks have been know to develop a split, which often only leaks at working temperature and pressure. That can make it quite hard to spot - typically you're looking for coolant when the engine is cold and/or the cap is removed. There might be telltale signs of dried-on coolant as a light-coloured powdery material. If it's only the expansion tank, the good news is that they're easy to fit and pretty cheap.

Of course it could be anything else that normally causes coolant loss - a leaky radiator or hoses; a leaking head gasket, even a cracked block. Only a compression test will rule out the the expensive ones.

Your definitely right to be questioning this if you're thinking about buying this one. It could be a way of knocking the price down and turn out to be a cheap fix, or it could be a sign of one to avoid. Compression test before committing would be my advice. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322
