4.2 Supercharged without RSE?

Hi guys. Recently an 08 plate supercharged autobiography has popped up on autotrader. Apart from being miles away it's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Apart from the fact that it hasn't got the rear seat entertainment. Now it's not a deal breaker for me actually although my other half loves the idea. I think it actually looks cleaner in the back without it?

My only worry is would it bother anyone else? When the time came to see would i really struggle? Or is it not so much of a problem.

I'm well aware a cheap tablet is probably more useful these days and I assume that will just become even more popular. I just don't want to buy something that will be unsellable a few years down the line!

Wouldn't bother me Thumbs Up

Look at it this way:

The system in the car is 11 years old now (06->) is pretty clunky and only lets you put in 6 discs. Which when the boot is full are a pain to change over, it might put a few off, but it is just one more thing to break.

iPads are far more flexible and more and more folks are using them for the kids. I personally wouldn't let it put you off if the rest of the car was good enough. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Many thanks, it was confirming my thoughts. Its not like there is a huge amount of S/C models around anyway, I just can't believe someone went through the autobiography program and took things off!

Its not hard to find her but this is the example in question, she is a beauty!

These days I think you are better without RSE. I copied all our dvd's to a hard drive, connected it to a portable wifi hotspot and now the kids just connect their iPads. Means they have a huge choice of stuff. Works really well. And we take it on hols so they can watch stuff anywhere.

You also have to consider what you would do if your RSE failed in any way. Would you then get it repaired (might not be that cheap/easy) as any prospective buyer would expect you to "knock something off" the price because it wasn't working and they'd say it was a deal breaker.

That's a very nice looking car too.......good luck. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Nice looking motor.

One thing I would say, and it's not meant to put you off, it make sure you are happy with the light guards being on the car. Some like them others don't. And you can't just take them off as the ones at the front are fixed into holes drilled into the wing.

It can be done but involved welding up the holes and repainting the wings. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks guys yeah it does look nice.

I'll be honest I am undecided when it comes to the light guards. I should really have asked how they were fitted, I did assume that LR would have made some provision for them to be installed and removed without drilling the bodywork.

However I don't fancy having all of that body work done to remove them if I decide I don't like them.

Hmm, its difficult to know what to do!

I have seen a few that look pretty good apart from delving into the MOT history and a few seem to have some advisories regarding "general corrosion" which is a little worrying.

I've spotted another in Motherwell that appears to be quite good value, just over 100k miles (which does make it well priced) and the MY07 interior. I'm up in Glasgow on Thursday so I might go and have a look at that. 2005 E60 M5

I think that the tide may just be beginning to turn against RSE on the used market. As others have said 1/ its a dated system with limited practicality 2/ its another thing to go wrong, ie something you need to put effort into to keep the car up to re-sale level and also, I'd like to add, 3/ when the time comes to sell in a few years time I think the buying market may well have distilled into a more 'purist' car lover base which is different to an options-ticking new buyer.

I have installed an HDMI interface into my RSE and with a lightning to HDMI adaptor we can put Netflix and any iPhone or iPad content and apps etc into the RSE screens 👍 Current: Supercharged 06 FFRR in Java Black

Hello, first post btw!

Welcome, I'm also new here. All good points and yeah I agree I suppose even now (perhaps a bit like me) I'm looking at a S/C VSE as its an awful lot of car for the money but also as I am a massive LR and rangie fan. In a few years people looking for a nice rangie of this age will be enthusiasts etc. 2005 E60 M5

Wow that sounds very useful, was that a difficult job? I've not looked but is there a guide anywhere to retrofit that? 2005 E60 M5

I've got a MY16.5 FFRR with this RSE fitted but my kids prefer their Ipads which rather defeats the purpose and also means a waste of money.
Would be v interested to hear if this was done on a L405 model and if so what was the process, I assume a DIY operation?

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Sorry for hijacking OP.

These days kids are too demanding of technology to find RSE of any interest. Maybe when it was first available in cars, it was seen as bit of a novelty to keep the rear occupants amused, but these days, a couple of iPads is definitely the way to go.

As to the comments on the MOT about general corrosion, I get that every year but if read the full "advisory" it says something like "item corroded but not structurally affected". In other words, it's surface rust and in our climates, there's not an awful lot that can be done about it. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
