Grom or Intravee II?

The last Australian 2G/GSM network (Vodafone) is closing in September so I want to migrate to using my iPhone via Bluetooth rather than call forwarding my iPhone to the car phone as I currently do when in the car.

I'd also like to dump the CD player and move to iPod/iPhone music.

I've searched and I've seen comments that the Intravee is better than the Grom for the early L322 (non-touch screen). Does anyone have any views on which is the better option?

The Intravee http://www.toysinyourcar.com/acatalog/intravee.html says it "Displays CD/MP3 text (ID3 tags, file/folder names, CD-TEXT etc) on most standard BMW display bars and Navigation screens" I don't think the Grom does.

I note that, for the Intravee, I'll need to check if my CD player has the 10-pin connector or the 6 and 3-pin connectors.

If one chooses Grom, does one go for the BT3 or the USB3? The USB-3 seems to require additional bits for BT connectivity.

Also, while I'm asking, has anyone tried this reverse camera kit?

The 10 pin plug has exactly the same wires in it as the 6+3, only in a different housing and order, but it is reverse engineerable Thumbs Up

The only head ache will be if the 6+3 plug directly in to the Intravee, I don't know I used a Grom, if so you'll need to get the correct plugs from a breakers yard.... BMW some MG's and early ffrr's Very Happy

So I only know the Grom and they would stream music via bluetooth and do the hands free at the same time provided that it was 1 device for both... However you can add the iPod lead and use that for the music and leave the bluetooth for a different phone, this worked very well for me..

FYI if you go for the Grom you'll need the BMW trunk option BUT you only need the short lead for the iPod, as LR fitted the CD player in the glovebox and this is where the Grom unit will sit Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Thanks Miggit. Dunno where I'd find a BMW wrecking yard around here. There are even fewer RR wreckers. Very Happy Ron B. VK2OTC

As I said it's only the type of connection that might Censored thinks up... the Grom comes with a loom as it's for multiple cars, so you can remove the wires from the 6 way plug and poke them into the 10 way in the rangie... for some inexplicable reason there is a 3 way plug and socket 8" away from the 10 way in the car, so the 3 way connection is a simple case of unplugging it from the ffrr loom and plugging it into the Grom lead... why they never did that for the other half of the plug I'll never know Evil or Very Mad But you can get around it.....

I just don't know what the connections on the intravee look like, I know that there are some units out there where the 6+3 plugs connect directly to the unit, and that is where the fun begins... Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Thanks for the heads up on the eBay advert, Paul, and for the links to the pin-outs. I was an electronics tech at one time so I hope I can do this! Laughing Ron B. VK2OTC

It seems I was confused. The Intravee won't do Bluetooth so it's not suitable.

That's a pity because I like all its other features.

The Grom does BT but doesn't integrate into the Vogue's screen to give track labels, etc.

I'm starting to think that a complete head unit replacement may be a better (and perhaps cheaper as the Intravee route needs the Alpine adaptor). I looked at the Erisin as used by Haylands but Erisin gets a fair bit of negative reviews on the 'net.

Of course, I could go the BMW BT upgrade route as shown on Bimmernav but it's damn expensive, too. Ron B. VK2OTC

Ahh, thanks Pete. I stand corrected. I didn't see that on any videos that I watched. Ron B. VK2OTC

Shocked Pete? Evil or Very Mad it's Paul Rolling Eyes

I can't remember if it scrolls the name and track and then just the first bit without scrolling, or it's just fixed.... My Alpine scrolls constantly in the Merc Embarassed

But whatever, you do get an indication as to what's playing.... and because of the way it displays a fixed number of characters... every now and then you'll cast a glancing eye and pi55 yourself.... Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Sorry, Paul, I had Haylands in mind as I'd been looking at his Erisin threads. Embarassed Ron B. VK2OTC

Whistle I'll let you off, I've been called worse Laughing And I suppose that it's an easy mistake to make, considering that my new ride is a Range Rover, green and sports a snorkel Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
