Rear wiper washer squirt question

I replaced my broken rear wiper motor and when I select the washer function water streams down the back window from the wiper arm in rather a messy way. I cannot remember if it is meant to be more focused and maybe my wiper arm is missing a focusing insert.

Can anyone confirm how the rear wash squirt looks on their car? Tom

Not sure if it helps but when I press mine, the initial wide (ish) jet pours down the window and is swiped across by the arm, what I have noticed is any extra presses don't do much as the arm gets it before it has chance to travel down the window, let me know if you want me to picture / video anything...jeff

The cap that sits over the nut holding on the wiper arm probably isn't located properly, or in my case it's damaged.

The cap should sit on top of the end of the shaft, the water comes out through the shaft, the cap then locates onto a nipple on the end of the shaft and the water goes through the cap and out 2 spray nozzles below the wiper arm.

It could be that the nozzles are blocked so the water instead of going out through the cap and then through the nozzles is just being forced out between the nipple on the end of the shaft and the locator in the cap and just pours down the window.

So can you adjust the spray pattern on the rear wash? Dave

Thanks for the feedback. I think I might be missing the nozzle cap that constricts / directs the spray. When I trigger the wash it looks like a cup full of water has just been dumped from the wiper arm.

I will check it out. Tom

I'm not sure Dave, I can't even get the water to come out my nozzles, it's just spilling down the window, which for me in an improvement to dripping onto the parcel shelf since I changed the seal........ Laughing

Might be worth sticking a needle into the nozzles and giving them a bit of a wiggle, see if it makes any difference.

If you're missing the cap completely the it's probably just spraying water through the shaft, out the tip and against the bottom of the spoiler, then dripping down onto the window.

Holding down the stalk to select the rear washer doesn't just spray water while you're holding it down, when you push it down it starts it's own spray sequence, once you push it down for a second or so it starts it's own sequence so after pushing it you can go round the back and have a look as it goes through it's own spray cycle, you might be able to see what's going on.

Same thing happened to me. The arm must be pushed onto the shaft or the water leaks from the base of the arm. I have mine a good bash with a rubber mallet and it was fine.

I'll check my folding cap as I replaced the wiper arm as well as the motor at the same time. I probably did not push it down hard enough!

Thanks for everyone's comments. Tom

Be careful giving it a smack of a mallet, if it's not located properly when you smack it it will either damage the cap or the nipple on the end of the shaft which is what I think happened to mine.

Checked it again and it comes out from the flap and the nozzles so the cap needs to be sat better. I will need to take of the spoiler to do it properly. Thanks for the advice. Tom

I had another look at mine today, same problem, just coming out under the cap and piddling down the window.

The nipple on the end of mine was damaged, and also the locator inside the cap.

The nipple can be replaced, it pulls out from the centre of the shaft, and after a bit of faffing about trying to make one with some copper pipe I just ended up adding this piece of clear pipe shoved into the shaft as a short to medium term solution, works fine and can't be seen when the wiper is parked.

For my centime's worth, I’m pretty sure that when I did my wiper motor leak repair some while back, there was a small rubber grommet between the motor output shaft and the wiper arm cap, as in the 2nd photo in hamlet’s post, only mine was rubber rather than the metal (?) one shown in the photo. (I know ‘cos it fell out and I spent ages on the floor looking for it! Happily I found it in the end.)
Are you missing that by any chance?

Hi.

I'd been putting up with this for the last two years. Last week I fixed it, I used a small 4mm drill bit (by hand, is only plastic )down where the snapped off nozzle goes into the metal shaft. I then cut a 16mm length of hard plastic vacuum pipe and pushed it hard into the hole. Took a while to get the length correct and yours may need to be longer or shorter but this then pushed up into the cap and now shoots water out of the washer jets as intended. I do sometimes get a small dribble down window but it's nearly perfect Thumbs Up 2003 4.4 Adriatic Blue FF

I was originally going to do something like that but since the cap was also damaged on mine and I couldn't seem to get a good seal on it I just gave up and drilled through the cap and extended the pipe the whole way out along the wiper arm.

I'm sure if someone had the part numbers Dan in Duckworth parts may be able to tell us if the nozzles that fit down into the shaft, or caps can be supplied.

All very simple to fit just a pain to have to take the spoiler off for access.

I don't have the part number but I'll post a picture and description and ask Dan.
