Deployable side steps playing silly :censored:

Not sure if the current inclement weather had crudded up the mechanism but my side steps were either really slow going in or out , sometimes staying in or out and generally looking a little out of kilter.

I have thoroughly cleaned the mechanisms and oiled them all up but still they don't seem to be happy.

I noticed that one side of the passenger step (towards the rear) seems to be more sluggish which maybe giving a signal that there is a problem and hence the step coming back out again when trying to close it.

Is there a position reset or a fix for this? The amount of times I've nearly fallen out of the car expecting the step to be there when it clearly can't be bothered to show itself. CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

Stan , fitted by dealer but well out of any warranty.

If it was electrical connection could this also cause them to go out of alignment? CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

I had a step that would retract partially and then come back out recently after using an especially cruddy B-road and used a lithium grease aerosol lubricant. I did all the joints and the screw from the motor both sides keeping a sacrificial towel underneath to catch the drips.......could just be that there is some grit caught in there somewhere and I applied a goodly amount.

Not teaching you suck eggs but if you used WD40 would have minimal impact; okay for cleaning but not good for lubricating IMV. Not sure how good a light machine oil would be but I went for the lithium spay because it has good cling properties.

As for the one being slow, it's obviously getting a signal to move otherwise it would stay put so not sure if a reset would solve this.

Just freed both mine off. Easiest way is to remove the step, 4 small Allen bolts. Disconnect rod to rear hinge, 8mm bolt. Place rags or cardboard on floor under hinge. Squirt copious amounts of wd40 to hinge pins whilst working the hinge in and out by hand, sure I must have worked it a hundred times but it freed off and works a treat now. Once free a good soaking of engine oil followed by a smear of grease Thumbs Up

I had this issue on my previous RR, was under warranty, they said either Battery issue- ( not strong enough) or motors on the steps. In the end they changed the motors of the steps. Never had problems again. 2011 5.0SC Santorini Black

^ Glad to hear it!

At some stage, I may purchase some bike chain cleaner to remove the lithium grease. Then clean the joins etc before re-applying.
