Bodywork checking gadget

Had my car evaluated by an LR dealer with a view to part exchanging it for a newer model. The mechanic had a pocket electronic device that he used to check the thickness of the paintwork to check for signs of body repair.

I thought this would be handy for checking over potential purchases but I don't know what the tool is called or how much they cost. Sadly I didn't get chance to ask the mechanic. Does anyone know what they are called? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

Thanks. Wow you aren't kidding. They go from anything between 30 and 300 pounds. Can anyone recommend one? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black
