Coolant query on a TDV8

Hi,

I had my coolant changed by the main dealer just before Xmas
Along with the other fluids and after about a week the coolant
Light came on as the coolant had dropped to the bottom of the
Bottle. I suspected an airlock had cleared as there is no signs of
A leak and the car does not have white smoke etc.

It was ok after that but I do notice a small drop every week from
just above the line to just below. I top it up and it only takes a very
Small amount.

Yesterday I took off the undershields and had a good look round still
No leaks. I only do shortish journeys and the car has done about 800 miles
Since the change.

I took off the coolant cap when the engine was warm and the level came up
About an inch. I started the car and the level slowly rose a little but more
No bubbles and it settled at a new level.

With the engine cold in the morning I have checked and it has dropped abit
But still about half an inch above maximum. Do you think it is an airlock some where?
As the small amounts I have been topping up seemed to have reappeared in the
Expansion tank.

I know coolant can get into the intercooler from on here which is not good but
I can under stand why the level has come back up when I took off the cap.

It is going back into landrover in tue but was wondering if anyone had any ideas

Coolant is clean
Oil level stays the same
Oil cap is clean

Are these particularly hard the bleed?

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

"With the engine cold in the morning I have checked and it has dropped abit "

I would expect it to do that as it will expand when hot.

If it is staying above the level and you are getting no further warnings I would think everything is OK. John

Thanks
It was only staying above the top line as I topped it up a small amount each week for the last 6 weeks
It was only yesterday that it all seemed to reappear in the expansion tank when I removed the cap when
it was warm and it is now sitting about half an Inch above the top line when cold.

I am abit paranoid about these engines cooling as a friend has had two go on him in a similar age RRS and is now waiting
On a third engine change. Big Cry

Sounds like an airlock clearing. The level will vary with engine temp. Leave it alone for a while and then check it. Try not to take the cap off when the engine is warm as the system will be under pressure hence why you saw the level go up.

Check the pipe which runs from the bottom of the expansion tank to the engine, it tends to rub on either another hose or a bit of body work and can cause a small leak. Bit of a fiddle to change but doable with a bit of generic hose if it's got a leak.

We thought one of the hilux was using water, was just an airlock which took ages to clear. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Good morning,

Car has been to landrover and they did a pressure test which they said it had a very slight
Drop over half an hour he said it went from 1.2 bar to about 1 bar. They suspect the egr coolers which is the first place they look apparently But they want £550 just to look and clamp the pipes to see if pressure doesn't drop anymore.

Seems a lot of money just to try something. They said they leak into the exhust but they agreed there is no white smoke
Etc from exhaust.

I asked them to rebleed which they did and they got quite abit of air out and said it should be ok now. I have not touched it
But have noticed today that the level has dropped to just below the top line. I suppose it could be still getting out the last of the air and finding its own level so I won't touch it until it goes below the bottom line. Car only does low milage of 50 or so miles per week but I am going to Cornwall in a few weeks and would like to find out if there is a problem.

Any ideas? Any other signs that the egrs could be leaking with out dismantling the whole top of the engine?
I have read that the thermostat housing can leak in the V without any dripping on the floor but have had a look down the side of the oil filter and cannot see any wetness and the landrover tech had a look and could not see any outward leaks which is why he has said egr coolers.

Thanks
Steve.

Do a search on thermostat housings.
A pig to get to - I found mine slightly leaking when I had it all in bits to do the EGR valve replacements. Had been losing a tiny bit semi-regularly and a very subtle smell of coolant from front of the car.
You cannot see it - I seem to recall a member managing to spot one leaking with a backlight boroscope?
Not heard much about leaky EGR coolers....but I stand to be corrected! 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted

I would wait to see if the coolant level settles down. I think mine had some thing similar. The Indy re-bled it and put stop leak through it. This after it was flushed. It now moves between the two marks on the bottle.

I've read a couple of reports about leaks through the EGR cooler. ______________________________

Thanks for the comments so far.

Ok so I am still experiencing coolant loss but may be getting somewhere.

Decided to replace the coolant tank and cap as they are quite cheap and there seemed to be abit
Of moistness around the old cap underneath which could be why I was loosing it. But now the coolant bottle does not get hot and I can't remember if it does?
Just done a 30 miles trip car all hot, heaters blowing hot and iidtool showing 95degrees stable on the coolant.

Everything perfect but coolant bottle cold? Could I have another air lock? What temp does the thermostat open on these?
And does the coolant cycle round everywhere including the bottle?

Thanks
Steve.

coolant doesn't really cycle through the header tank, its basically just an expansion vessel. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks NMJ

So should it get hot in 30 miles? Or stay cold?

coolant is pretty warm in the expansion bottle after a run out. so you might have an air lock. keep bleeding air out of the screw on the top of the expansion bottle. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
