getting songs off ipod to use with my new umno interface!

All

Posting out of desperation after lots of googling!
Have an ipod nano 5 here that as circa 1000 songs on it. I don't really do iDevices as I get the hump but we used this as a permanent library in prev car to the fatty.
Have created an itunes library from it on my pc with the intention of switching the songs onto a usb stick (i know they will need converting format). The usb stick will then live in the fatty for use with the umno-interface I just fitted.

Does anyone know how the h*ll to get the songs off the damned thing?

Yours in hope

I used some software called media widget, http://www.bootstrapdevelopment.com/ipod-to-itunes-transfer which copies iPod to pic.

If you connect the i-crap via USB so you can see it as a mount point (linux) or a drive letter (windows) then you can copy the files directly from there. They all have hexadecimal random names though so you will need to listen to each one and then rename the file. It was a ball ache when I did mine but it did save me from buying software to do the job.

Have a look at this link - the files are not immediately obvious so this should walk you through finding them.

As far as encoding goes, with USB sticks having so much capacity nowadays there isn't a real need to make the files any smaller. The FFRR doesn't play .FLAC files unless it's via an Android device over bluetooth and most of the other formats like MP3 are compressed and nasty sounding. If you have a decent sized USB stick then a 64 gig one will hold about 75 complete CDs in native format.

Apple doesn't want you to take song off your Nano. It's a way of trying to stop music copying. Normally, you have the songs on your computer, put them in iTunes, then use that to move them on/off the Nano (or other iDevice). People have a problem when a computer or hard drive crashes and the iDevice now has the ONLY remaining copy. ITunes won't help you here. There are programmes that will take the songs off the Nano, but it's much easier to just take them from their original location. AFAIK, iTunes WILL let you take a playlist off the Nano because that's not music, just a data file about what music the play. The playlist should work in other Apple/Mac/iDevice things, but might need converting to work somewhere else. Depending on the size of the list, conversion vs just redoing it on the new device should be considered carefully. Good luck.

Which nano do you have, it may be possible to put it in disc mode, you can then access it as you would a USB drive and pull the files off it. Google iPod nano disc mode. Worth a try but doesn't work for all iPods. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

You were reading my mind northern!

I was busy putting the i-crap into disc mode when I got your reply notiifcation by email.

When you put it into disc mode you need to then enable hidden folders as music is hidden from view. Once that's done you can copy it across to pc. You then need to make the folders non-hidden ones. Have tested with first album and was able to play in windows media player.

It's transferring at the moment (about 8gb) so once they're across and unhidden I will then have to convert to mp3.

Watch this space, and thanks. 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted

Yes, you have to unhide the folders and music files. I have found in the past that the labelling of the folders can be different and comprises of just random letters, which can make it laborious, however the music is there and accessible. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

You could plug you iPod into your PC, install iTunes and then burn MP3 cd's @ 120 tracks per disc approx. If you go down that route, reduce the burn speed otherwise it often fails at high speed.

Good advice above. You can get a lot of mp3s on a CD. However, the FFRR can be very fussy about the file structure. It's worth a google first if you go that route.

I found I had to burn them as data rather than music tracks. John
