Td6 noisey fuel pump?

Our Td6 is making a whining noise, which initially I feared might be the turbo but it actually appears to be coming from towards the rear of the car. I think it might be the in-tank fuel pump but where on the Td6 is the secondary pump mounted?

The noise seems to disappear slightly at higher revs and become more noticeable at lower revs and at idle.

I have done a search but I didn't find much on noisey pumps.

Hi Glen, mine has made a noise in the past, and periodically still does it.
Iirc, the td5 disco fuel pump noise, was due to the leak back from the injectors to the fuel tank.
On my td5, I removed each injector, and changed the copper seal and o ring on each one, this cured the noisy fuel pump issue.
I notice from the other thread, you have in the past changed your injectors, and miggit has done the same, so that may rule out my theory.
I have bought some new seals and o rings to fit on mine, the princely sum of £11.00, I'm yet to have a go at fitting them, need some time and nice weather Laughing
the secondary fuel pump is located on the rear n/side back wheel arch under a cover, sort of where the back door opens , underneath which is held on by two bolts, obviously the main fuel pump can be heard on the off/side rear.
hope your sorted for a while mate.
Greg. Thumbs Up

Greg,

That may well explain it then, the noise is most noticeable around the NS rear wheel.

I think that pump is quite reasonable (£40 iirc), so I might just change it to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the info, once again.

Glen.

Where is a good place to get a new one? Prices seem to vary enormously.

Prices vary because of quality, O.E is going to cost more than Pattern parts.

As above, quality determines price.
Both of my pumps had been replaced when I bought the car, so I haven't had to venture in that area .
read quite a few times peeps on here have bought pattern parts, then ended up buying oe.
it's one of those I'm afraid, you pay your money and make your choice.
At least it's the easier one to get at.

That will be for an aftermarket X5 pump, the LR price is for the pump and sender unit as a complete assembly and they are £400+ Shocked

I did read a write up a long time ago, someone did the in tank pump swap over with an X5 unit on a TD6.. but I can't find Sad But from what I can remember it's the same as the petrol pump (instructions in wiki) but you don't need the fire extinguisher!! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Just had a thought that you might be able to get OEM from BMW... I don't know if BMW offer the pump by itself or as a complete unit.. might be worth an enquiry Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I will check later but I suspect it is the secondary pump, not the one in the tank.

Checked the car again this evening. Took the secondary pump cover off and it was definitely not whining but it was making the odd clicking noise. It sounds more like turbo whine now but on Saturday the noise was really noticeable by the NS rear wheel. Perhaps I have a dodgy turbo and a knackered fuel pump Crying or Very sad

Whistle We have a really bad case of 'Roverphobia'.... If your that worried about it take it to an indy and get a second opinion... I would say take it to a stealer.. but they'll want their pound of flesh Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Possibly, I gather that it is a common ailment.

No need for Indy or Dealer intervention at this stage, if it is one or other, or both, I will get it sorted.

I only said that because you seem to be bothered by it and your considering throwing lots of money at the problem... I'd hate to think that you'd end up changing something expensive, like a turbo, only to have the noise persist. That is why I suggested an Indy.. The ffrr is a joy to drive when it's all going OK, and a real worry when something isn't quite right... If the car wasn't so refined you'd probably never hear things like whiny pumps... so you'd never worry..

Not a dig at you Buddy, we have all suffered from Roverphobia at some point... I'm just getting over it, having sold the car, but after 2 years of ownership I still panic when out in the car... and then I remember it's a 5 pot Merc.. as smooth as a brick!! And to cure that I have now got a 4 pot diesel RRC... up to 30 all you can hear is tappets, and then the MT tyres kick in and all you can hear is them howling down the road Laughing Laughing

Fit MT tyres... it will hide everything wrong over 30mph !!! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
