brake lines

Well, I had my mot on Thursday, failed , the rear brake line that goes across the rear axle had virtually disintegrated, and had only just gone( phew lucky me).also the rear lower hub bush, I've already done the uppers, last year.
I decided no messing about I'll follow joe90s excellent write up and replace the rear brake lines. Massive thanks to joe90 and this forum, puts you wise to what you are taking on.
so far I've done the pipes leading to the rear, I have used kunifer, I may do the fronts later on in the year, I bought two 7m rolls of pipe and the rears have nearly taken one.
the lower bushes I have on order, they should be with me tomorrow, I'll give an update when I'm finished.
thanks again forum.Greg. Thumbs Up

Ok , so I've finished the job this afternoon.
No leaks Very Happy . Quite pleased with myself, never done brake line flares before.
Bow down Bow down Bow down thanks joe90, the tank cover mod worked an absolute treat, I did try, but as you say, if on a ramp or more room underneath, it doesn't want to go back.
used the gunsons easy bleed on all four lines, and I have a system full of fresh fluid.
just the lower rear hub bushes to do now, then the retest.
Phew I'm knackered!!!.
As an extra bonus, I managed to get the long rear brake line all in one. I unwound the whole coil along side of the car, then roughly shaped the line that goes into the sill to the front, passed the line through the sill then, loosely cable tied the line, which I had already flared at the front, then passed the rest of the unravelled coil along the top of the back axle, a bit of pulling and checking I hadn't got a knot, then roughly gauged how much I needed to do the final flare, and cut off with mini tube cutter, worked a snip, so only needed to do four flares.
amazingly, most of the pipe was in excellent condition, apart from the exposed areas, where it had really gone.
thanks again joe90, for your excellent how to in the wiki.
And thank you fullfat forum, couldn't have done the job without you. Bow down Bow down Bow down
Greg. Thumbs Up

What causes this on a not very old car? I've never replaced a brake line, even on 50 year old cars. Ron B. VK2OTC

Probably the salt they put down on our roads.
as I stated above, the lines wdre in very good condition in the unexposed areas, plus they were steel.
I must admit, its the first car I have had to do because of failure, nevertheless, now done in kunifer, they should outlast the car.

Mine (2012) had corrosion on rear brake pipes at last MOT, treated with waxoyl, but with road salt and off road muck I expect they will need to be replaced before too long. My last 322 needed pipe replacement after about 7 years I think, so the current one is worse. Only Range Rovers since 1988

OK, thanks.

Salt is not an issue here unless one drives on the beach. My 1995 P38A had no corrosion anywhere (except the tailgate cables which were replaced) when I sold it in 2015.

Now, can you imagine owing a 20-yo car where the underside is rust free and the bolts are like new? Laughing Ron B. VK2OTC

Just as an aside.... Are the OEM brake pipes made of steel? The reason I ask is that I heard somewhere that in the US they insist on steel brake pipes on any car with ABS braking systems as the pulsating pressure when ABS is activated can cause case hardening of Cunifer pipes.

Does anyone know if this is true or just an old wives tale? 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I believe they are steel yes. I think that some countries ban copper brake lines due to the possibilities of it hardening and splitting causing issues and failure. Not sure if its actually true though! I did mine in kunifer using joe90's excellent guide and cant see them having issues ever again.

CuNifer is a copper nickel alloy I think so does this also suffer from case hardening as this is my favoured brake pipe material? 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE
