Issue when starting car when it's hot ! (FIXED PAGE 2)

Hi,

Think I already know what issue should be,

Recently had fuel pump fail replaced and was fine. Couple weeks later when starting cold car starts instantly. If I leave the car for 2 hours and come back so engine still warm and try to start it cracks for 8-10seconds and then fire runs roughy for couple seconds and then runs perfectly.. been doing this for week or so..

I have no codes or engine light.

Reading a lot BMW forums with same engine. And a lot seem to point towards the crank position sensor and cam position sensors x2.. apparently they don't anyways give a code and can be affected by heat ?

So I have ordered crank and cam sensors to replace and see what happens.

Is there anything else should be looking for or anyone else has this issue and resolved it ?

Could also be an injector. As it heats up and the internals expand, it causes excessive leak off when cranking Thumbs Up

did read somewhere about someone having same kind of issues and was leaking injector so when stopping fuel was leaking into cylinder and sitting there so car was little flooded when starting each time.

just i have done fuel pressure test and fuel pressure is fine that's how the fuel pump was diagnosed, could try leaving fuel pressure gauge on for hour and see how the pressure drops off. that will be next step :-/..

Sensors I have ordered are arriving Monday apparently. As crank sensor was a not in stock item.

Update,

Items turned up yesterday.

managed to get them fitted, very easy.. Both CPS and Crank Sensor Replaced.

problem still the same, if leave car longer then 30mins to 2hours its hard to start... after 3-4hours starts fine.

so not sure if injector is leaking, from oring or the injector itself.. stuck bottle redex in tank to see if anything changes as got long journey today.

got to do some more reading, just most posts i find have no follow up to say if they fixed the issue or not.. ! 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

I had the very same issue a few weeks back and it stopped instantly once I changed the petrol filter.. car would start great then after a run it would start then cut out or threaten to cut out

checked to see if coolant sensor's are working and they are.

checked to see if air temp sensor working it is.

checked connections on the fuel pump and fuel filter all connected correctly.

sprayed engine start fluid around all the injectors to see if broken o ring and there no was RPM increase at all.



Still have same issue, leave 30 to 2 hours and try to start it cranks for 10 second and then starts to catch and start runs just about and rough for 2-3 seconds and then runs perfectly !!!

only thing can think is the actual injector is leaking, but thats little too far for me to go so most likely going to book in my landy garage and let them test injectors so on and use the more advance scan tool then mine.

Still no error codes what so ever and when i use monitor on the car, injector timing looks good and cylinder roughness all the same.. nothing which jumps out to say it not normal ! 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

last update,

fuel pressure tested fine when running and leaving for little while pressure goes down, also after leaving for 2hours and starting getting a really strong petrol smell from exhaust and dripping sometimes.

one or more injector must be leaking, everything else has been checked twice ! engine cylinder being flooded and take few seconds to clear before starting.

so ordering a second hand set injectors to swap over to see if ok, or a second hand refurbished set just checking prices.

i believe injector issue was most likely there before but as old fuel pump was dieing and not giving correct pressure it was ok, now new fuel pump pushing correct fuel pressure is making the bad injector leak as higher pressure.

heres a video of the issue.. this is with the car being left 2hours..





next update hopfully be fixed with replacement injectors, getting a set as should be matched !

I've also got the same issue so it would be good to know if you solve it.

When you replaced the pump did you replace the whole assembly or just the pump part of it? I read on another site there is a non return valve in the top which could cause the pressure to leak back to the tank, how true that is I don't know.

I just replaced the pump inside the assembly, I have see some posts about a non return valve but to be honest at the time I did not fully take notice to see if that's the case.

I feel it's more likely the fuel injectors for me for number reasons above and of course I will update this thread with the outcome.

so, Replaced fuel injectors with refurbish ones.. still same issue... must admit losing my patience now..



swapped fuel filter back to old one, to make sure the pressure regulator was working correctly same issue.


Although car now actually losing fuel pressure it seems now, when i leave for 30mins or hour fuel pressure is very low.. Cannot see any fuel leaks of anykind..


Issue is i have replaced.

New fuel pump (just motor Replaced)
New fuel filter
New Crank Sensor
2x New Cam Sensors
New Set Injectors.

Same Issue.. there's nothing else left to cause any issues is there ?

Does anyone know if theres a check valve on the fuel pump or pump Assembly ? 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

As already mentioned, I'm having exactly the same issue as you, but I must admit I've not tried any repairs yet. If mine struggles or fails to start (and goes in to a restart automatically) I switch it off and then immediately try again and it starts immediately! I'm not sure what this suggests but it isn't suggesting flooding, because surely introducing another start and more fuel it would make matters worse?
I had a friend check the fuel rail pressure when first having this issue and it did reduce quickly after switching off.
