RR TD6 vs RR 3.6 TDV8 --> Should i stay or should i go

Hi,

My RR TD6 Vogue from 2003 has now 220k and i'm afraid someday the gearbox failure will come... or not i know some guys who have the TD6 with 350k with the original gearbox. But i'm always afraid!

My TD6 is awesome and everything right. But i saw one 3.6 TDV8 from 2007 with 160k and now i'm Rolling Eyes thinking about it!

I really want true advises and thoughts about - it worth changing? i have some questions, and i want some advises please!

- The TDV8 has the same MPG than TD6, or is much more higher?

- About reliability the TDV8 It's much more reliable? I want to change to a car that is more trustful than the TD6, i got this with the TDV8? The construction and mechanics are better?

Many Thanks! Ex-FULLFATTY now downgraded

Just my humble opinion but I drove a few TD6s before I bought my TDV8 3.6 and they are chalk and cheese power wise. I waited until I could get a V8 because I found the TD6 gutless. Again , just my humble opinion. 2015 4.4 AB

I'm really happy that you can go for a tdv8, I have driven (now) another td6, not de egr'd and not remapped, like mine.
I can honestly say, the two are like chalk and cheese, mine is very lively, compared.
The reason I'm happy for you is, I know my next car won't be an RR, only because of the height adjustment on the later RR's.
Hope you enjoy a new RR soon.
Greg. Thumbs Up

I had a td6 before my previous tdv8 and the latter wins hands down. I had chipped the td6 too but didn't bother with the tdv8 as it was just better. Had a few more toys too which is always a bonus.

Good luck with your choice. Current: RR L322 2010

Have to agree. Had a td6 and had it remapped after a few months, sold it and went back to an Audi but I missed the comfort of the FF so decided to come back but into a TDV8 and I've not bothered having it mapped nor am I likely to. Current

Thanks for all off your comments!!!

Can anyone comment about the reliability of the TDV8.

Common problems?

Is a good engine?

The Zf is a good gearbox?

Usually less problems than a TD6?

Many Thanks, Ex-FULLFATTY now downgraded

Service history is important.
Its a good engine and gearbox. Turbo's can be problematic but they can be on any car. 2020 Porsche Panamera Turbo Hybrid (V FAST)

I find the TDV8 a quieter and more refined car than my old td6

Td6 was still a great car but the TDV8 is better all round onto no6 Range Rover

The 3.6 is a nice smooth powerful
Engine. Correct on time servicing seems to be important. The reason for the occasional turbo failure isn't really clear.

EGR bits falling off and going into the motor is another occasional fault.

The ZF 6hp26 transmission has a great reputation and is in a heap of different makes such as Bentley, Ford, BMW, Audi, Peugeot. A ZF workshop commented to me they can last 700,000 while occasionally others last a little more than 100,000km.

The late 2008 L322 has a lead free stator bush which probably means a trans service every 50,000km is a good. Idea.

There is the occasional report of a lack of grease on the output shaft causes spline failure on the shaft and input gear of the transfer box on the L322, D3 & RRS. This happened to my L322.

otherwise the Magna Steyr transfer box is reliable.

I've read the electronics got better on the facelift 3.6 tdv8. ______________________________

I went from TD6 to 4.4 TDV8. Drove a new 3.6 in 2007. Obviously the V8 is a better car, as it's more modern and everything that comes with it.

I skipped the 3.6 as I wasn't keen on the egr/ turbo munching engine issues. Most run fine I am sure but I ain't taking the chance at the mileages I would be buying at.

For me, the TD6 has the engine with less issues, but the gearbox is reputed to be less reliable....

Who knows mate? I don't think any car is completely reliable.....

I really like the idea of a 4.4 but they rarely dip below 30k Swiss Francs here, and then I see a 3.6 that's 18 months older and only slightly more miles but half the price and it's very hard to justify.

I would upgrade now but my TD6 isn't worth much so I'm waiting for something to go wrong/MOT fail for the decision to be made for me. Every year extra I get from it means the annual depreciation I get is lower.

I think in the future I'll trade every 2 years or so instead of running into the ground.

Here the 4.4 is very expensive 52.000€ !!!

The 4.4 is much better than the 3.6? Is much more reliable?

I love the Digital dash! but is almost twice of the price of the 3.6 Ex-FULLFATTY now downgraded
