Replace M62 Engine?

In my ongoing quest to get my 4.4 engine running nice and quietly, I think I've reached a cross roads. I can do one of the following three options:

1. Sell the car with a noisy engine.
2. Get somebody to crack open the engine and fix (probably at least £1,500 best case scenario based on replacing hydraulic lifters and nothing else wrong).
3. Pay £3,500 for a replacement engine, newly rebuilt, probably get the AA breakdown repair insurance to pay the first £500.

I think option two looks silly. Option three looks OK, but then I've got a nine year old car which will owe me a lot of money, but have a nicely rebuilt engine with two year warranty.

Option one means I can try to get a newer car, though probably struggle to sell the car with a noisy engine, not get much money, and not have the budget to get a much better one.

Other problem with option one, is that if I buy another car, I wouldn't know what to buy. I've never been in this situation before that no other car appeals to me. I thought of BMW 535d, 730d, Alfa 159, even Porsche Boxster, but nothing really appeals! I think maybe this is the problem with buying a FFRR, buyer beware, afterwards nothing will compare!

Any advice appreciated. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Miles and condition on yours? Options - everything you want? Happy? How serious is the motor prob? Just lifters?

Tough call to make from the outside, but if you're happy with your RR, I'd prob do the motor before taking a large hit. If you can sell at a good price despite the prob, I'd do as Dan said.

Interesting that nobody seems to be saying replace engine?

To me the worst option seems to be to repair engine, since I could spend £1,500 doing the lifters, and then discover all manner of other ills!

I'm really minded to go for the engine replacement. The car will then have been expensive, but with a new engine, plus lpg, and I'll splash out on aftermarket RSE, and keep it for a good long time. Even if the gearbox goes I'll just get that redone.

Also considering getting 2010 facelift if I replace the engine! That way if I keep it a long time it won't look so dated. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

mmmmmm i can see your dilemma.

worst case costs;

new engine+
new gear box+
facelift you want+
say another 1k on other RR crap, a suspension fault, brakes, battery etc. soon adds up

Add all that to the price you think your get for yours, now would another few k get you say a 06 facelift petrol with 50k which *should* be major cost free for a while?

*it is range rover so no guarantee.. 2004 black Vogue TD6

I'm really tempted just to go for the engine, since a 50k facelift model would be prone to all the same problems over time anyway, and once I've got the engine done, and possibly the gearbox, I'll have a little peace of mind.

The facelift certainly wouldn't be a priority.

I'm thinking if I spring for the new engine, I may get my money back if I sell? If I sell it as is, I would if lucky get 10k, with a new engine I would look to achieve £13k. Is that realistic? Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Why not take it in as part ex for a newer one at a LR dealer or specialist. Once you part ex it it's thier problem. Or am I being dishonest. If it is that bad then they will not take it in. If they don't notice it then maybe it's not bad enough for them to worry about it.?? Ash
