Scotland 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Santorini Black
Brake pads 60% worn or 40% left!

Just had contact from main dealer to report pads all round are 60% worn and advising to check them again in 6 months.

I will change them soon anyway but is that not why these care have break sensor wires?

in theory the sensors work ok if both sides wear down the same but them once the sensor gives you the warning you will have to replace it which isn't such a bad thing...
the occasional visual inspection is best.. ... - .- -.

Buy new pads and ceramic grease and monitor every month or so. The wear sensors will alert you should you forget.

... or do it like my other half and only get the pads replaced when the maximum radio volume can no longer overcome the metal on metal grinding (screaming?) sound... Laughing

Pretty sure that only one side per axle has a pad sensor on it, not both from memory when I replaced my brakes.

Works in theory, but as has been said a visual inspection is best Alex

So, a set of pads which cost over 200 quid, and you're going to waste 40% of that (80 quid) ?

As long as they are wearing evenly, which is easy to check, getting down to 10% has never caused me problems. And that's about the point that the wear sensor turns the light on. Thumbs Up

I used a thin drift to push them out assisted by a small hammer and didn't really have any problems, but a valid point nonetheless. Thumbs Up Si. <This is my name.

Only if you opt for genuine

Plenty of cheaper options, be it budget, OEM or uprated

Sensors are on the front left (nearside) and rear right (offside)......and they are different sensors.

Unfortunately for me, one of my pins was seized solid and i ended up having to cut the pin in half and using the punch to get both parts out.

Just as a side note, if one pin does get stuck, remove the caliper mounting bolts and you can get the pads out without the stuck pin having to be removed. The new pads can then be slotted in and the second pin used to hold them in while you remount the caliper.

......if you price up a set of genuine pad fitting kits, you will nearly double to cost of the pads .....make sure you are sitting down when you call JLR !

Thanks for all replies.

I've fitted pads to the car before so am comfortable with buying and DIY, was just a bit surprised that the 60% worn advice inferred getting new ones.

mzplcg has nailed it for me really Thumbs Up

Incidentally, the existing pads are genuine LR, fitted at a main dealer... and the fronts have always squealed. Using ceramic paste did eradicate it for a couple months but the squeal returned!

I for one will get my moneys worth and have never had a problem waiting for the wear indicator but I do like to have a visual check when I can ,you can generally see if you look between the wheels these days on most vehicles anyway.If you read this forum there are many who suggest new discs as well as pads way before they are needed so am not sure why you would not get your pads worth before you change discs anyway.Use some common sence,a dealer or garage only want to fit components as much as possible and will do allsorts to try and sway you to part with cash whenever possible .
