oil leak

Well... I have only had "blue" for 2 days, and already got a problem...

He is losing oil. Sad

I have spoken to garage, and they say it is probably a seal in the turbo charger thag starts to leak.

They say this a very common problem.

I haven't seen many comments on here about oil leaks, so is this really a common problem.

Are they right that a new Turbo is best way to go?

Think you need to narrow down the location of the leak before any suggestions are likely to be helpful. Oil does tend to pass through turbo, but that doesn't necessarily mean new turbo is required. It's a fairly big job and a new turbo isn't cheap.

If turbo is passing oil, it may end up in the intercooler. This is under pressure and any small leaks will result in a fine mist of oil all over the very front of the engine, particularly the electric fan behind the grill. Could also be a rubber turbo hose leaking or poorly fitting hose connection, which would lead to oil at th bottom front of the engine, once th under tray was removed.

There is a crankcase breather filter, which tends to get very clogged. It wasn't included in the service schedule, but it definitely needs to be replaced regularly. If this hasn't been done, pressure will build up and can force oil out of otherwise perfectly fine seals. Occasionally, dispsticks have been forced out of their tube and this pressure is bad for the turbo. Other symptoms can be very large clouds of smoke on acceleration after idling for a few minutes. There is a different type of filter (vortex type) that can be fitted to avoid the need for regular replacement, but even fitting a new clean original type filter would be a good move.

There are, of course, many other places that oil could be leaking from. Personally, a replacement turbo is not where I would be starting. Your mechanic could be right - but it's a very expensive job to do just in the hope that this might be the problem. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hi , deffo change the crankcase breather filter first, there is a bmw vortex one that most use but you can change the foam filter for very little.

Thanks for the comments.

I will certainly try changing the filter. I saw another post regarding this, and I had a look. The "modified" filter is only approx. £20, so it is worth doing it.

The L322 previously belonged to an indy garage that I know quite well, so I think there is a good chance that this mod has already been done, but I will order the part anyway.

I spoke to the garage yesterday, and they say that this is actually quite a common problem with these engines. They said that the oil starts to leak out of a seal to do with the turbo. Unless I completely misunderstood, it is NOT the seal between the turbo and the engine, but a seal inside the turbo somewhere. They said that to sort it, the turbo has to come out, and be either replaced, or opened up to replace the seal.

They have given me a quote of €500 for a replacement turbo (this doesn't seem TOO bad), but I was just wondering if what they are saying is indeed true. Have you kind people heard of this problem too?

In my experience of various turbo charged cars if you had an oil seal go inside of the turbo then you would be pumping out blue smoke from the exhaust, not leaking oil out.

That is unless it's an oil return pipe seal that's gone and if that's the case then you only need to replace the seal not the turbo charger.

That is what I thought, but I am not very experienced with these things.

The car is going to the garage on Monday because they have to refill the A/C, and they will take a look then.

To be honest, even if they say that the problem is the turbo, I would prefer to get them to "deal" with it (since it was their car up until I bought it from a car dealer a few days ago), and they I can be as sure as possible that the problem is solved.

I have ordered the crank case valve, and will replace that with the Vortex version so that that potential problem is solved definitively, and then we will see.

IF, however, I have to replace the turbo... I have seen turbos for the BMW X5 that are new, but are significantly cheaper than the ones being advertised for the RR. Are the two turbos exactly the same?

OK... garage took a look this morning, and have confirmed that the turbo is leaking.

He said that it is leaking between the two "compartments" of the turbo. Sorry, I am not a mechanic, and I don't know the terms. To make matters worse, I am having to translate what the garage said into English.

Anyway... I have ordered a refurbished turbo. They will install it when they do the next service in 5000 Kms.

I would be so lucky.

Here in Luxembourg, unless you buy from a garage, you buy "as seen".

I am not too worried about this as the car is in such good condition otherwise that this is something quite small.

I have the replacement turbo on order, and will get it fitted. I might then keep the old one (rather than sending it back for a partial refund) and get it reconditioned and keep it as a spare.
I have lots of spare parts for my discovery, so it is probably an idea to start building a stock for my L322!!
