Anyone ever have a petrol cap go bad?

Hi all I've had a strong smell come from the petrol filler area for some weeks. Today I got it on the ramps and thought I'd check the tank and hoses attaching from the tank connections were ok... after a few seized bolts all looked well.

We then looked at the simple route and the petrol cap oring has cracks our 4mm long all round it... could this be my problem? I tried putting some geese on it but didn't make any difference. Also I have notice a little lumpy running at idle that may be coincidence but seemed to happen around the same time...
