Dealer Advice Needed

Our TDV8 AB was in the dealer last year and whilst it was being serviced they carried out the oil drain modification for the turbo as it was smoking a bit after gentle running.

The car was left at the dealer for a week for the service, MOT and remedial work to be carried out.

When we got the car back everything seemed ok. The car was in the dealer at the end of April, however, in July I decided to look the car over with the IID Tool. I found a fault code that showed as being triggered on Monday 25th April 2016 at 13:01.

I cleared the code and it immediately came back again.

I rang the dealer and made them aware of this as soon as I found out. Due to health issues, and other time constraints we've only just got around to taking the car back to the dealer to get the issue resolved.

They were supposed to change the sensor on Friday however the wrong part had arrived in the box, the new part arrived on Saturday morning and we got a phone call this morning to say that they'd encountered a problem when changing the sensor. The old EGR temperature sensor has snapped in the manifold and they're having to remove the turbo and manifold from the car to get it out.

The dealer have spoken to the mechanic who did the work on the car and he's claiming that they were nowhere near the EGR temperature sensor when they carried out the oil drain modification however I've heard on good authority that most cars that have had this modification have had this sensor damaged.

Does anybody know where this sensor resides on the car in relation to the modification gets fitted?

They're talking about the bill being in the region of £800 to change this sensor now that they're having to strip it down and drill it out which is irritating seeing as they broke it originally and they've snapped it trying to remove it this morning.

It'd be nice to hear where everybody else thinks we stand as I don't see how they can question them damaging it seeing as the date and time that the fault was originally triggered was when the car was in the dealer.

Thanks!

David.

P.s. Need to get in touch with GAP and find out why my IID tool seems to be stuck in French too. Rolling Eyes 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I've not had this issue, but did, on my last car and some time ago, have a situation where recall work led to another problem and the dealer billed me for about £1000 for fixing it. I took this up with LR Customer Relations (0870 5000 500) and had a very useful and detailed discussion on the technicalities with an expert there. I don't know whether that level of service is still available, but on that occasion I was told to leave it with LRCR and the the outcome was that I did not pay anything. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thanks for that, I'm waiting for the dealer to call to say the car is ready and I'll discuss the bill with them then. The car is out of warranty so I'm not against paying something for the repair but what really annoys me is the fact that they've snapped the sensor in the manifold and the only reason they were replacing it is because they broke it in the first place.

Hopefully we'll hear something from them tomorrow to give us an idea of whats going on.

Can you prove they snapped the sensor? That fault code may not equal a snapped sensor at the time. Equally, can they prove that they didn't? Ask to see the job card and a health check as it may be on there my the technician who did the work.

Not an easy thing to be proved or disproved either.

Keep a cool head is my only advice, if they are reasonable and you are then you are much more likely to get somewhere.

cheers and good luck! Alex

The only way I can prove they damaged the sensor the first time around is because the IID shows the date and time the fault was triggered and at that time the car was in their workshop.

I know they've snapped it in the manifold this time around as they've told us as they need the car for 2 - 3 days to strip it down and remove the snapped sensor.

Very difficult situation. Been on both sides of this. I'm an Aftersales Manager myself so have had a fair bit of similar scenarios in the past. Also been in your shoes as well.

All the best with it. Alex

Ask to look at the job clock times when they did the recall as that will show if someone was actually working on your vehicle at that date and time which would help you as well.

Thanks Alex.

Rang about the car today and they've said late Thursday or early Friday for completion. If it's taken them a week to do it i can really see them digging their heels on the bill! Crying or Very sad

If its taken them a week then I'd put money on it being a job filler and every monkey in the workshop has had 10 minutes on it between jobs. Current

I spoke to them yesterday for an update.

I don't think started work on it for a day or two after they snapped the sensor. They've had to take the engine out of the car to remove the manifold. That means dropping the subframe, front diff, etc.

The manifold was sent to a machine shop to have the snapped sensor removed. This I'm pleased about as it means it was probably spark eroded rather then being drilled and tapped.

They started reassembling the car yesterday and have advised that it should be ready for collection on Monday evening.

I've asked them about the bill twice and they've said they'll only be charging book time to change the sensor. This is about 0.7hrs apparently although I'm not sure they know I k ow that. Laughing
